It’s taken 7 shows, but finally The Chase has its first winners, with three contestants beating The Governess and sharing $28,000.

74 year old Grandmother, Philomena (Phil) Trevor-Hunt from Wangaratta, Steve Wall from Bonner in the ACT and Melburnian Jared Kitney are the first team to win the local series.

During The Final Chase, the contestants managed to push the Governess back three times, making her job of chasing 22 steps too difficult.

“It’s a horrible feeling when you lose, I’m very competitive. I have huge respect for a really good winning team, that scores high and works well on the pushbacks. Very well done to them!” said The Governess.

Since airing last week Seven’s show has improved considerably on its predecessor Million Dollar Minute, with wins over Hot Seat during its second half hour. But the game is only just beginning with Hot Seat winning last Friday.

The trio plan to put their winnings towards holidays and home deposit funds.

  1. I think the show has improved since the first episodes. AOK has loosened up, no tie, more interaction with the chaser and contestants. I love the British Chaser as well, Bradley great as host. So I don`t mind 2 episodes. Got to be better than the amount of news they throw at us. If I want to watch the news I go to ABC24.!!!

    1. They have nearly wrecked it! Take a brilliant show, the British one, replace a warm, genuine, funny, sincere, down to earth host with a melodramatic, unengaging egomaniacal poseur. Limit the interaction between the contestants, eg no conversation as to whether to go high or low. Muck up a key factor ie making the low offer very low (sometimes it is minus on the UK show), which shows greed and can create entertaining conflict. And you’ve got the eviscerated version we are left with.

  2. Being one of the lucky competitors who participated in last night’s show, I have to disagree that my winnings of $9,333 was paltry, it is a considerable amount of money and will make a big difference in my life.

Additionally, having been on numerous quiz shows, I believe it is easier to win money on this show than other comparable shows. Look at hot seat as an example – sure the person sitting in the hot seat has a 1/4 chance of winning money in the end – however, the majority of the time they did not build the cash pool and those who did are relegated to zero winnings because they didn’t come up trumps in the unforgiving Russian roulette format.

Unlike millionaire, “the chase” contestants are rewarded for taking calculated risks, team work and relies less on pot luck.

I believe there are more winners than many would believe. It would not surprise me if they showed a week…

    1. Apologies! No disrespect to you or the amount you won – now that I think of it the $9,333 would also change my life greatly, as a young student.

I fully agree with your assessment on the difficulty and differences between The Chase and other game shows. But I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt for Channel 7 to inject a bit more money into the show to make it competitive with the amounts given away on Hot Seat, rather than disappoint the viewing audience with a string of $0 games 🙂

  3. I feel like that since this show is so hard to win, they should increase the cash builder to $5,000 per correct answer, and offer as much as $250,000 for the big offer, if the contestant has played really well.

This would really raise the stakes and make for exciting viewing, than a paltry $28,000

Maybe a consolation prize of $1000 each if they get caught would also help.

  4. While I am very happy for them I don’t like the concept of the show. To win money is very hard and any cash that is won has to be shared among complete strangers. It’s ridiculous having the British Chase on just before it.

  5. The look on Phil’s face when she saw The Governess come out was priceless. I noticed it had a massive win over Hot Seat on Monday. If it starts rating better in Brisbane then it will be flying.
