Tonight Foreign Correspondent is in the Himalayas for a special story on a monk and a troublesome 5 year old child, named Tashi.

The inspirational story of a former Buddhist monk and the home he built for abandoned children in the Indian Himalayan foothills. His newest charge, a traumatised little girl called Tashi, is his toughest challenge so far.

“When I see they are laughing, screaming and playing, I feel like I’m living the childhood I never had”– Lobsang Phuntsok, a former monk who was an abandoned child.

Five-year-old Tashi is the latest arrival at the refuge Lobsang built for abandoned children.

Tashi’s mother has died and she’s been neglected by her alcoholic father. Wild and troubled, Tashi is struggling to find her place among her 84 new brothers and sisters.

“She’s a troublemaker… She never shares. If someone takes her snacks she’ll fight them” – staff members at the refuge.

But Lobsang is a strong believer in teaching by doing. If she is shown love and compassion, can Tashi become a loving member of the community?

Teacher and pupil share life’s lessons in this joyful film about a unique Himalayan haven called Jhamtse Gatsal: The Garden of Love and Compassion.

Tuesday, September 8 at 8pm on ABC.
