This week’s Insight talks about how wills can be changed after death and if it’s possible to make yours watertight.

Most people don’t realise that, unless your will is carefully crafted, it might not be your last word.

The legal document is meant to ensure your wishes are carried out when you die – from how assets are distributed, to who would look after the children and what kind of funeral you want.

But when a will is revealed and someone’s been left out, or they didn’t get as much as they thought they would, huge quarrels can ensue.

A recent study has found that three quarters of contested wills are successfully overturned.

Guests include:
Tania Darveniza
“Words are difficult to explain the emotional roller coaster … I’d been fraud-ed, I’d been lied to, I’d been misled.”

Deirdre Lampard
“It was never about the money with us, it was mum’s wishes.”

David Shalders
“I’ve got a million dollar debt that I’m paying off because of my sisters.”

Zoë Kellam
“I was gutted. I felt abandoned.”

Prof. Prue Vines
“The vast majority of wills don’t get challenged and the person’s wishes are followed through.”

Tuesday at 8.30pm on SBS.
