The ASTRA board has awarded its Pioneer Award to Foxtel Chief General Counsel Lynette Ireland, at today’s ASTRA Conference in Sydney.

ASTRA Chairman Tony Shepherd said, “In the past, this acknowledgement – in the form of an ASTRA Pioneer Award – has honoured four chief executives and creative professionals who have served the industry with distinction.

“Today, in our twentieth year, it is my pleasure to add a Lynette’s name to this list.

“She has helped drive our advocacy, established key agreements that underpin our industry, and driven changes that benefit both content makers and broadcasters.

“In addition to her role at Foxtel, she has been a wonderful ambassador for subscription television
through her board memberships of the Communications and Media Law Association, the Intellectual Property Awareness Foundation, and, of course, ASTRA itself,” he said.

Lynette Ireland said, “When I first walked through the Foxtel doors in 1985, subscription television was just on paper.

“Here is my top 10, a successful merger between Austar and Foxtel which had many false starts, two appearances before the High Court, four AFL deals, six, the number of years the court case ran for, Seven, the number of Communications Ministers I have dealt with. Eight, the launch of Fox 8, Nine, the number of months we spent negotiating the Austar merger, and 10, the current deal that gives me awake at night as we await ACCC approval.

“All of this is what I love about the industry, and due to the talented people that work within it.

“Many people, pioneers in their own right, work behind the scenes, and I have been lucky enough to work with you over the years. Thank you for this wonderful recognition, and I am proud to be this year’s recipient – thank you.”
