Smithers to (finally) come out to Mr Burns?

Here's a spoiler only for Mr. Burns.

For anyone who has watched The Simpsons over its 26 seasons, this is clearly no spoiler: Waylon Smithers is gay.

Apparently Mr. Burns is still unaware of the rainbow around him, but that looks like it’s about to change.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” producer Al Jean tells TV Line. “We deal with that in two episodes. … We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

Burns has obviously missed the telltale signs (hello Malibu Stacey collection?), but Season 27 which began in the US yesterday will confront the issue.

In fact Smithers was first openly gay when he helps reopen Moe’s tavern as a gay bar.

There have been several other LGBT characters in Springfield including Patty Bouvier, Rainier Wolfcastle, personal assistant Karl, collectibles fan John -and rumours about Karl & Lenny.

Can’t help feeling unrequited love may prove catastrophic for Smithers though…

No word on when the new series will return to ELEVEN.

  1. i still enjoy the Simpsons. have watched it for the majority of its run. i think its getting back to its best or at least close to it. the show does not need to be fresh but does need to deal with issues that are pertinent to today’s people in a way and insightful way. that’s what makes the show great.

  2. Let’s hope these episodes are better than the woeful season return. They need to hire new comedy writers, these days the episodes are just 22 minute stories which make no sense or are just dead boring. They have completely forgotten to add the comedy element.

  3. The cynic in me thinks they are throwing some juicy storylines and character work to Harry Shearer after the kerfuffle over his contract and nearly losing him. As with most things Simpsons after 26 years, there is little that is completely fresh and new. Burns awareness of Smithers may be cursory but it will hardly be a revelation. Cripes I’m analyzing The Simpsons. Love it all the same!
