Theatre base proves tricky for Australia’s Got Talent

Talent show return next year will have to spread itself across 2 cities due to theatres being heavily booked.

A thriving theatre industry has proven to be a challenge for the return of Australia’s Got Talent.

In July Nine announced the series would be returning for 2016 with “a studio component based in Melbourne.”

But TV Tonight understands that is now proving to be much trickier. The show has its sights set on being produced in a theatre, but many of the larger venues have hefty bookings well into the second half of 2016 already.

As a result the Melbourne-only base is no longer assured.

A FremantleMedia spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Following an exhaustive search of theatre spaces around the country, we have secured spaces in both Melbourne and Sydney. More details to be announced shortly.”

It’s not clear whether the show will remain in Melbourne beyond any auditions.

The previous seasons were produced at FOX Studios and Docklands Studios, although there were theatres hired for audition rounds.

AGT’s return appears to have benefitted from a perception that viewers are looking for fun this year. While X Factor is a singer’s show, Got Talent embraces performers of all kinds.

An extended audition deadline ends September 14.

  1. Australia’s got Talent may have a wide variety of acts and although there is some great entertainers out there, the majority of people are absolutely stupid, so would not watch it just for that alone.
