Voice winner’s single outside top 20

The Voice is yet to upstage X Factor in chart success, with Ellie Drennan debuting at #25.

The Voice may have lit up TV ratings but its winner Ellie Drennan has had to settle for #25 in the ARIA charts with her debut single, Ghost.

It sold 5907 copies in the first week, somewhat better than Anja Nissen’s 3023 sales in her first week after winning The Voice 2014.

To date both Anja Nissen and 2013’s Harrison Craig have only released covers albums. 2012’s Karise Eden scored double-platinum for her covers album, but reached #5 last year with an original album.

In contrast The X Factor has found better chart success with its winners including Dami Im, Reece Mastin, Samantha Jade and Marlisa Punzalan.

Some observers have also suggested Sony is more successful at capitalising on X Factor winners than Universal has been with The Voice.

Meanwhile The Voice coach Delta Goodrem recently enjoyed her first #1 single in 9 years with Wings.

Ellie Drennan’s album will be released on Friday.

  1. People don’t care once the show is over! I would say that since the end of Australian Idol (and maybe the first two seasons of The X Factor on 7), the singing shows have faded greatly. Yes, they are successful in the ratings, but they are not ege-of-your-seat, must watch, blockbuster favourites like they used to be. Australian Idol is still king in this area, before media fragmentation and short attention spans (generally speaking guys). I still think Idol had an appropriate amount of ‘tough love’ which added a dose of realism to the show.

  2. So out of 1.5million viewers only 6000 of them decide to buy her music. That is a terrible strike rate and to be fare to Anja Nissen her single wasn’t released until months after the show had finished so she didn’t have the advantage of launching her single off the back of the grand final.
