Media slam Kate Ceberano …for getting one word wrong

One word wrong and your national anthem is officially a "shocker?"

2015-10-04_0142

According to News Corp, it was a National Anthem “shocker.”

According to Fairfax Kate Ceberano “stuffs up” the National Anthem.

Yes it was moral outrage after Ceberano sang “in history’s stage let every stage Advance Australia Fair,” instead of “in history’s page let every stage.”

Seriously. One word. She didn’t change the meaning. She didn’t sing off key. And like a true pro she kept going and didn’t fall to pieces.

Yesterday was supposed to be about Aussie sport, but it appears another sport was waiting in the wings: knocking tall poppies.

Never mind that she sang live in front of 90,000+ people and another million or two on national TV.

What happened to our Aussie spirit of a fair go? Where was our ability to laugh at ourselves? And frankly most Aussies have forgotten the words to our anthem at one stage or another. Such imperfections are part of our national identity.

Kate Ceberano is ok by me to sing the national anthem anytime she damn well pleases.

Or Bedroom Eyes for that matter.

  1. I didn’t watch the AFL Grand Final so I didn’t see the performances but I love both Kate and Ellie. Kate is an Australian icon (and yes David re Bedroom Eyes) but do yourself a favour and go and watch Ellie live at the Troubadour on YouTube, you will be impressed. And she doesn’t sing that rubbish Fifty Shades song.

  2. I agree with you David but it wasn’t one word. She actually sang “In history’s state, let every state.”
I was at the game and while the media is reporting she sang in histories stage let every state you can clearly hear the T in state in both words. The age has the video you can listen your self. Is it a shocker when someone doesn’t sing the national anthem? I don’t really think so, It’s an honest mistake but I find it hilarious that all the people criticising her for getting something wrong are actually wrong themselves when reporting what she sang.

  3. I don’t like Kate Ceberano ever since X factor 2005 on Ten where she went nuts over all the young boys auditioning and had a fetish for them. But slamming her for one word is a bit strong

  4. I had no idea who sang the national anthem. I could hear it, but every time I quickly checked all I saw was a bunch of footballers, some of whom attempted to mouth the words, the rest didn’t even bother. If you’re going to pay someone fairly bit $ to sing the anthem, how’s about concentrating the cameras on her/him. We’re going to see hours of the footballers scones!

This happens every year, they might as well play a recording of Julie Anthony. Pathetic.

  5. I’m not surprised Newscorp had an issue with Kate’s performance That mob complain about everything that Murdoch doesn’t like.

As for me, I didn’t even notice that she got one word wrong – along with millions of Australians who also don’t know the words.

This years entertainment was much better than the Meatloaf and Angry Anderson fiascos. Sure Elle Goulding was a poor choice but she did the best she could. Blame the AFL’s CEO’s daughters who picked her.

My only gripe- Seven didn’t show the beginning of Up There Cazaly. Viewers were treated to a million commercials instead.

As long as there are no more Meatloafs or Angry Andersons – I’m happy with the pre-entertainment.

    1. I noticed that too about Mike Bradys Up there Cazaly. I didn’t like that and also how every year including this year they barely show any of the motorcade.

  6. Kate Ceberano was nothing short of fabulous. The game was such a snorefest that the media were grasping at straws for a headline. The anthem is an extremely difficult song to sing and she did a beautiful job. Wonder how many of those criticising her even know the words to the anthem. The one Aussie who actually performed, besides Mike Brady, and what do Aussie do? Slam her. Shameful.
As for Ellie Goulding, her style doesn’t suit a huge stadium venue at all. The 50 Shades of Grey theme song doesn’t exactly scream ‘footy build up’. Bryan Adams was great because he chose material which suited the venue.

      1. True. To be honest, they’re a bit embarrassing.

Mind you, so’s the current 2nd verse (which is based on what was the 3rd verse sung at Federation – and that is actually slightly less embarassing than the current version…)

  7. Worst grand final ever. I have to go back to Meatloaf in 2011 GF when he stuffed it up!
Hopefully next year, I want more rock music in the 2016 AFLGF.

    1. Confusing comments. If Meatloaf was worst entertainment how was 2015 so bad? Maybe you missed Bryan Adams, he gave served up a good dose of rock music. What was worst about it, other than your team didn’t win?

  8. Kate was fantastic, and poor Ellie, her voice is too delicate for belt out for a stadium full of people, she’s not that type of performer, so having a backing tape with background vocals is pretty standard for these types of events to fill out the sound, but even that was messed up!

  9. “Kate Ceberano is ok by me to sing the national anthem anytime she damn well pleases.”

Hear, hear. Kate is Australia’s best singer by a country mile. It was a refreshing change to hear the anthem sung at a sporting event and it not get mangled by the singer.

  10. Why are the media picking on a legendary singer like Kate Cebrano? For getting one word wrong? And why are you even reporting it? Its not a big deal. Since you’re a blog on the Internet I’m classing you as media.

  11. As the Sydney Morning Herald said “not that anyone noticed at the MCG anyway”

I think Rupert Murdoch wanted hits on the video to sell more advertising.

  12. I agree, being at the gf yesterday Kate sang it beautifully. Yes she stuffed up one word but its one word. Id rather listen to someone sing it well and stuff up 1 word than someone get the right words but sound awful.

  13. I gotta admit i did pick it up when she was singing it… (also the Ellie Goulding moment) however both are being blown out of proportion. I guess the game was so boring “they” need something else to pick on

  14. I never noticed until I saw it on Twitter. I thought Kate looked and sounded great.

Poor Ellie Goulding copped a lot too. With the backing track mix up.

  15. Much worse: she insisted on singing advarnce Australia, instead of advance Australia. Faux ‘Middle English’ accents sound so out of place.

    1. To quote an old Telstra ad: “Advarnce, mate – advarnce!”

FWIW, ‘advarnce’ – phonetically, “ǝd’va:ns”, with the ‘a’ as in ‘start’ – is not only the preferred British English pronunciation, but seems to be favoured by most Australian dictionaries. The alternative “ədˈvæns”, with the ‘a’ as in ‘van’, is more of an Americanism.

    2. Laurie – I take you have never met a South Australian? We darnce, we advarnce, take photograrhps, have gardens full of plarnts and ride public trarnsport. Get over yourself. And Ms Ceberano spent a lot of time in SA as a child.

  16. Bryan Adams was fantastic!

It wasn’t immediately obvious what was going on with Ellie Goulding during pregame. At first it looked like she was miming but then you couldn’t hear some lines so that didn’t necessarily make sense. It became more obvious during the first song outside in the post game concert where there were big chunks in lower key where her mouth was moving but you couldn’t hear. Surely these things should be ironed out before pre match cause audio improved alot after the first song in post match concert.

    1. I think Bryan Adams could have made better song choices to go with a sporting event but he did perform well. As for Ellie Goulding don’t know who she is and 5 years from now likely no one will remember her.

  17. I was thinking the exact same thing after I read that bullshit News Corp article. They also went completely over the top in criticizing Ellie Goulding about her performance also.

  18. People just love to hate don’t they! Everyone jumping on Ellie Goulding too, who I think was doing her best (with a backing track to help her vocals feel fuller in that huge arena). Bryan Adams did well, but this is a guy who has been touring for decades. He’s played all over the world in all sorts of huge outdoor arenas and harsh conditions, so he knows how to make it work.
However I personally think it’s not brilliant any year. The audio is always horrendous and putting them in the middle of the ground miles away from the audience makes it feel silly and disconnected. When Mike Brady sang Up There Cazaly his audio on that little stage sounded better than anyone else, and the crowd looked great cheering right behind him. They should have the stage closer to the crowd like that I reckon. Maybe have a moving stage that drives around the edge of the field as they perform.
