Network TEN has posted a $312.2m loss despite an improved year on air, blaming the loss on a $251 million license impairment, which it flagged to shareholders in April.

Television earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) saw a loss of $12m, compared to a loss of $79.3m in 2014.

Nevertheless, revenue increased by 4.5% to $654.1 million while television costs decreased by 6.5%. TEN was the only network to increase its ad share over the previous 12 months and the only commercial network to increase share between 6pm – 10:30pm, after coming off such a low base.

The network cited new 2015 titles I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, Shark Tank, Gogglebox, The Great Australian Spelling Bee and The Bachelorette Australia -all have been renewed for 2016.

“Our strategy of reducing costs in certain areas and investing in prime time programming is clearly producing results,” said newly-installed chief executive Paul Anderson.

“This year, the primary TEN channel has recorded its biggest prime time audience since 2012 and its highest commercial share since 2011.”

But the network indicated while television advertising market remains “short” in terms of forward bookings, gross advertising revenue is expected to increase by at least 10% in the first three months of the 2016 financial year.

TEN’s Board will also reduce from eight to six directors, comprising two independent directors (one of whom will be Chairman, David Gordon), plus nominees from Foxtel and other substantial shareholders.

TEN’s shares are presently in a trading halt and will remain so until Thursday as the company looks to implement its $77 million share placement scheme that it announced to shareholders in June. This will be in addition to the $77 million TEN will receive as part of Foxtel purchasing up to 15 per cent of the network.

TEN also becomes a 24.99% shareholder in sales agency Multi Channel Network and has an option to become a 10.0% shareholder in Presto.

“For TEN, the partnership with MCN is creating scale, new efficiencies, improved data capability and broader integration opportunities for our clients,” Anderson said.

“We expect our partnership to drive further improvement in TEN’s revenue share and power ratio.”

  1. was surfing on Youtube and stumbled of an old TEN News piece on the company itself where the company made a 150 million dollar profit. and tv revenue up 12% way back in 2009/2010. youtube.com/watch?v=XE6jJ3QDUKE Since the ousting of the former board and CEO and Chairman its been all down. now they have made another consecutive loss.

  2. This is good news and bad news. Revenue up obviously they couldn’t do much worse then before. But the fact that they are citing the license fees as a impairment shows that they just don’t get it. almost all of their shows are foreign most of thier sports coverage is foreign what little of they do have. Grant Blackley their former CEO made a good point at the Radio Conference earlier on in the month when he alluded to investment in people and content, thats where the revenue and growth will come from. He was broadly talking about radio but the same can be said for tv.

  3. So, they actually had a trading loss of $12M, but the bean counters can wave their wand over the accounts and, presto, we can now make $312.2M profit in the future before have to pay any tax, thanks to carried-forward-losses. What is the formula used to value their licences anyway? What’s the value of a licence if its for something that doesn’t produce a profit?

  4. Looks like their strategy is to keep writing down the value of the licence until the Government has to pay them to run their network.

The scale is needed to overcome the disadvantage of Ten and Foxtel being small players in TV ad market.

  5. Ten have done a brilliant job this year! I’m definitely enjoying watching this channel more thesedays as opposed to a couple of years ago (around the time of The Shire and Being Lara Bingle) where I was watching more of 7 & 9. I can’t wait for the new seasons next year 🙂
