Sunrise‘s much-publicised Bieber Island event must have been too much Justin for many viewers who chose Today instead.

Nine’s breakfast show drew 339,000 viewers over Seven’s 306,000 -Bieber only delivered an extra 11,000 over last Wednesday’s show, but admittedly a pile of free publicity.

In primetime Seven had other problems. Heroes Reborn has failed to take off with just 444,000 / 372,000 for two episodes. That will likely see Seven move it to a later start, but potentially open up a slot for Blindspot. There was better news with Seven News winning the night.

Many viewers again spent the evening with The Bachelorette, the top-rating entertainment show of the night, before switching to Gruen and Utopia.

With Seven challenged, Nine managed to slip ahead as winners, despite ACA being their only primetime winner.

Nine network won with 25.6% then Seven 24.8%, TEN 23.7%, ABC 19.3% and SBS 6.5%.

Seven News (1.1m / 1.01m) topped the night for Seven then Home and Away (725,000), Caught on Dashcam (648,000), The Chase (581,000 / 420,000) and Heroes Reborn (444,000 / 372,000).

Nine News (1.02m / 1.1m) was best for Nine then A Current Affair (954,000), The Block (776,000), Celebrity Apprentice (593,000) and Hot Seat (589,000). A Global Citizen Festival special was 156,000.

The Bachelorette (992,000) was a winner for TEN. The Project was 679,000 / 458,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 532,000 and movie: The Heat was 520,000.

Gruen (917,000) and Utopia (866,000) both did great business for ABC followed by ABC News (815,000), 7:30 (721,000), How Not to Behave (476,000), Would I Lie to You? (439,000) and Antiques Roadshow (322,000).

On SBS Great Continental Railway Journeys was 372,000 then 24 Hours in Police Custody (180,000) and SBS World News (145,000).

7TWO’s Rosemary and Thyme (250,000) topped multichannels.

Today: 339,000
Sunrise: 306,000
ABC News Breakfast: 69,000 / 53,000

  1. ‘Sunrise‘s much-publicised Bieber Island event must have been too much Justin for many viewers who chose Today instead.’

Hahaha. Take that Seven. First The X Factor and now this.

I don’t even like Today, but it’s good to see Seven getting what they deserve for all this Bieber rubbish.

It’s not as funny as the ACA One Direction disaster from last year though.

  2. So disappointed that Scream Queens did not rate in the top 20 digi chs, it really is the very best US import right now and the chainsaw ep was superb…..the armless bloke and the ice cream cone scenes were classic schlock horror…..as for heroes, the original was dire and drawn out, no surprise at the numbers for it…

    1. Absolutely on Scream Queens, that armless scene had me in stitches and I even said out loud “It’s only a flesh wound,” plus Coney and Red Devil fighting was done really well, so many laughs in that episode. Thinking back, I can actually see where the idea for this was born in American Horror Story: Freak Show and the character Dandy Mott. I still think the scene where Dandy walked into the tent pole and kept going on his shooting spree was one of the best in a show for ages and tScream Queens builds on that great silliness.

    2. I agree. The show can be silly but I absolutely love it – a good entertaining medium after work. The sound machine scene between Jamie Lee-Curtis and the other woman had me laughing out loud.

  3. Given; Heroes: Reborn is re establishing itself with new characters the numbers aren’t that bad given it was up against the Bachelorette which is a bit of a juggernaut at present and Utopia on ABC – well who doesn’t production from Working Dog. Many probably recorded Heroes (maybe)

  4. not good for heroes reborn D.O.A I thought it had potential but it seems australia voted it out to the rubbish i was surprised that it started right on 8:30 too and that didn’t help you thought it might maybe everyones used to the late starts with programs @david knox how did Aquaries and Bates Motel rate?

    1. I boycotted Sunrise this week because of the Bieber BS. Today’s show from the Sunshine Coast was infinitely better and if they can keep up that standard I won’t be going back to Sunrise.

  5. Didn’t think having Justin Bieber on Sunrise would do much is increase ratings. Firstly, Bieber is only popular with young teens and secondly the teens I know don’t watch Sunrise as they think Kochie is a dork and just so uncool.

  6. I said it when they announced it, Blindspot should have aired last night at 8:30pm with the 2 hour Heroes Reborn premiere at 9:30pm. I just hope this won’t shoot Blindspot in the foot when Seven slots it in the timeslot (which i am assuming they might do). The Player is DOA in America too with soft ratings last week. Seven should also reevalute The Blacklists timeslot too but i doubt they will shift it.

    1. Well they need something good at 7.30pm on Wednesdays too – I’m not sure a dashcam special as a lead in is the best they can do. 7 killed The Blacklist by leaving it off air for so long after the last christmas period. Something I’m sure we will see happen to some of these new shows

      1. The Blacklist’s numbers plunged when it was was fast-tracked at 9:12pm behind The X Factor last October, which resulted in it getting moved to later slot.

  7. Celebrity Apprentice numbers seem to be stabilising – it’s kind of nice (and extremely rare these days) to have a reality show that you only have to commit 80 minutes a week to!

But agree a non-celebrity version would be so much better – the original series on Nine was great and only had average ratings because of the terrible timeslot it was given.

  8. Congrats TEN. The Bachelorette is so close to 1m…hopefully it can crack the magic number soon. It’s a shame about the start of the week though. I suppose they would be happy that TBL seems to be stable around 500-600K and not going south.

  9. Heroes didn’t rate well for Seven in its final season on Seven. Not surprised is return bombed. Hopefully Blindspot or The Player gets a promotion and gets adverts.

    1. Heroes was on last night? Damn I really don’t watch 7 casually (what person under 400 would?) so I no idea they were fast tracking it! Spent last night doing work – oh well hopefully it’s on their catch up service

  10. We won;t see another series of How Not to Behave – numbers have been disastrous for all of its run. Not sure where Heroes Reborn will go as they have The Player starting next Wed night at 9.30, which would have been the logical move for it.

    1. Perhaps if they do HNTB next year as just a series of youtube clips and ditch the presenters and studio content it will not only save money but rate better?
