Vale: Maureen O’Hara

Veteran Hollywood actress Maureen O’Hara, best known for the films How Green Was My Valley and Miracle on 34th Street, has died aged 95.

She died in her sleep at her home in Idaho.

Born in Dublin, she moved to Hollywood in 1939 and later became a US citizen.

“Her characters were feisty and fearless, just as she was in real life,” her family said in a statement.

“She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world.”

Her films included My Irish Molly, The Quiet Man, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Parent Trap, Jamaica Inn, The Foxes of Harrow, and The Black Swan.

Whilst best known for her feature films O’Hara also featured in the telemovies A Cry of Angels, The Red Pony, The Christmas Box, Cab to Canada and The Last Dance plus the series The Garry Moore Show and Off to See the Wizard.

She was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2014.
