Adams Hills criticised over Hanson tweet

Updated: "I apologise." Comedy turns sour for Adam Hills after a joke on social media backfires.

Adam Hills has copped a social media backlash after the wording of a tweet he sent out on the weekend:

https://twitter.com/adamhillscomedy/status/665730349419204608

Many criticised his phrasing, stating that while they didn’t agree with the views of Pauline Hanson, Hills’ response was no better.

Carolyn Cheer
@adamhillscomedy Pauline Hanson’s message of hate is vile, but so is your response. Disgraceful (I don’t like her views but shame on you).

Rich Gregory:
@adamhillscomedy love the hypocrisy on display here mate. If someone made this “joke” about a woman on the Left you would jumping up & down

BarkingMad_GC :
Usually he’s amusing…
Today was not that day… #AdamHills #ABCtv

Hills followed up later with the following tweets:

Jeez I’m not seriously suggesting we hang Pauline Hanson. She just represents Australia as much as IS represent Muslims. A dumb extremist.

By the way, I said “hung” not “hanged”. I didn’t want her dead.

Wow I have inadvertently upset people. I genuinely find the idea of Pauline Hanson, dangling, alive, maybe in a hijab, to be funny.

But it was still too much for some:

Nathan Nasr
@adamhillscomedy stop. All you’re doing is digging a deeper hole

On the weekend Rob Lowe was also criticised for his comments following the attacks in Paris.

Updated: Hills has since written a lengthy response which says in part:

I committed a mortal sin of twitter – sending a tweet and not being clear about what you mean.

About an hour later I checked twitter and was surprised by the outrage. I mentioned it to my wife, who replied that perhaps people thought I wanted Pauline Hanson executed by having her hanged from the Bridge.

In time I have come to realise that the word “hung”, although technically not the same as the word “hanged”, still puts the same image in people’s heads. For that I apologise. I was in no way suggesting Pauline Hanson should be executed.

  1. This is more an example of the current illiteracy of people on twitter and their inability to comprehend the difference between two words than poor taste on Adam’s part.

Although, to be fair, I don’t think his tweet was in particularly good taste to begin with IMO.. and I loathe Pauline as much as the next person.

    1. Just read the rest of Adam’s response, this line resonates most with me:
“If you disagree with my views on Pauline Hanson, I’m ok with that. If you agree with my views but think my joke was unfunny, I’m ok with that too.”
I am part of the 2nd sentence.

    1. Why?

Why are comedians not allowed to have a say on serious matters simply because they are comedians?

Should we leave all serious comments to the jaded, biased and (IMO) uneducated views of a few radio shock jocks and journalistic hacks?

He is entitled to his view. Sure, he could have expressed it better, but then, that is pretty human failing.

  2. He does a lot of ranting and editorialising in his show, as though he’s lived in the UK all his life, instead of 10 minutes. He really should keep a lot of his political opinions to himself. He’s still a guest In England as far as I’m concerned.

    1. Agreed. I find ranting ‘comedians’ annoying because their rants are usually simplistic and applauded mostly by simpletons. Hills used to be funny but has become very arrogant and too opinionated.
