Avid Doctor Who fans admit to tearing up over the death of ‘Clara Oswald’ (Jenna Coleman) on the series yesterday.

Coleman exited the series in the episode Face the Raven, penned by Australian writer Sarah Dollard. Coleman had previously announced her departure, but when and how were secrets kept under wraps.

At the Doctor Who Festival in Sydney on the weekend, Peter Capaldi admitted it was an emotional farewell.

“It’s almost like your affections for that person become mixed up with the character and you’re saying goodbye to the person, although I wasn’t.

“Somehow you overcome the emotion and find a little bridge, a little moment,” he acknowledged.

Coleman, who had already spent a season on the show, was pivotal on Peter Capaldi’s first day on set.

“The first scene we did was when the TARDIS lands on the beach at the start of Deep Breath. So I found myself for the first time actually being inside the box, which was a long ambition,” he said.

“There was a lot of us in that scene so I just had to get on with it.

“Jenna is so easy going and welcoming and instantly was my friend.

“She was the first person to show me the TARDIS set, showing me where to stand and how the TARDIS works. She’s great.”

Coleman, who first appeared in September 2012, will next appear in the ITV miniseries Victoria.

  1. I really hope this truly is the end of Clara. Easily the worst companion of the new series. Poorly conceived, badly written and the character itself was wrapped up at the end of Season 7, yet she stuck around for 2 more seasons becoming more and more obnoxious. Perhaps we can focus on The Doctor for a while, with the companion being the sidekick rather than the main character.

  2. Glad to see there are others unconvinced of her demise. She is listed in the credits for episode 12, however this could also be a misdirect on the part of the beebs or she may simply appear as a memory. If all that doesn’t come to pass, it needs to be remembered that there are countless “echos” of Clara dispersed throughout the Doctor’s timeline in order to keep him in line. Presumably this means his future timeline as well, so she can always come back via that path.

Personally I was disappointed with this exit and think she deserved better. It was a particularly stupid and reckless death and didn’t really even make much sense. I didn’t feel it was particularly brave as Clara only took the timer recognising that The Doctor would make such a fuss Me would remove the curse just to shut him up. I basically just wanted to slap her for being so stupid, and as Clara has always…

  3. Being Doctor Who I won’t rule out Clara coming back in some for remeber ‘Clara’ has already died twice on the show. First as a Dalek in the future, then in the past, she is the impossible girl so I’d bet Clara will be back in the future.

    1. Yep, people have to remember that Clara jumped into the Doctors Timeline meeting all the Doctors incarnations and often saving him. In the series so far, meetings have been shown with the First Doctor, War Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, and Twelfth Doctor. Plus Clara has been shown to have caught the Third Doctor’s attention; to have been in close proximity to the Second Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Sixth Doctor and Eighth Doctor, so meeting a future Doctor is not out of the question (as she’s met all of them).

  4. Its been more than 24 hours since i watched and i’m still absolutely devastated. Clara was my favourite. I knew she was leaving but didn’t think she would be killed. I’m heartbroken. Going to take a while to get over that is for sure.

    1. Short answer: because it’s meant to be heart-rendingly emotional, which is what passes for ‘depth’ and ‘complexity’ in NuWho.

Longer answer: they don’t. There’s _always_ a cop-out – either they’re not permanently dead & come back to life later in the episode (i.e. Rory), or there’s an endless stream of incarnations waiting just around the corner (i.e. Clara). And, really, they’re the only 2 examples. Well, Adric, if you want to go back to TOS – and even he lives on through having given his life to father all life on earth.

(OK, and arguably Peri – who either (a) died so that Deep Roy could inhabit her body, or (b) lived & married Brian Blessed.)

    2. They don’t really. Looking at the main companions, not the ones who travel for an episode or two only we have Rose who lives on in a parallel universe. Martha left of her own accord and is still very much alive. Donna had her memory wiped. Amy and Rory did die, but after living well into their old age. So they sort of died due to what gets us all in the end, becoming old.But they still had a long life with each other in N.Y. Clara’s is the first death of the new series for a companion really. In fact, unless I am mistaken, the last death on screen of a companion was of Adric.
