A new streaming service showcasing Australian movies is set to launch in the first half of 2016, Fairfax reports.

OzFlix is being backed by producer Ron Brown and industry distribution veteran Alan Finney. Their not-for-profit organisation, the Australian Film Futures Foundation is in discussions with National Film and Sound Archive.

It aims to have between 250 and 400 movies including Mad Max: Fury Road, Oddball and Paper Planes and eventually host “every Aussie movie ever.”

“At the end of three years I’d like to have everything,” Brown says. “Our database identifies just over 2000 titles, going all the way back to The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906).”

  1. I can see this working for someone like me, it would have to be month to month one though like the other streamers. There are a certain TV shows I watch on all the services now, however I only do one at a time and cancel each month and move to the next once all episodes are up (so keeping it at $10pm only). With this I can see myself subscribing when I’ve watched what I want on the others and have no subscriptions, it would fill in those blank months perfectly.

    1. Good to see someone prepared to stream Aussie movies not just so called Hollywood blockbusters. Most of which I do not have time for. We have made some outstanding films over many years. It may not be common knowledge but Australia produced the world’s first feature film. Or was it the second?. (I stand corrected)

  2. I’m in two minds. Yeah it’d be cool to have Aussie movies to stream. I may not watch any on it because I own Fury Road on Blu-ray 3D already. I don’t know if I’d subscribe to any movie only service though.

Wouldn’t they be better going where the people are? Netflix for instance. There’s only so many things people would subscribe to. You know what though, one tweak which would make this a success is Aussie TV. Literally everything. Including old series of Masterchef, Big Brother, Mother and Son, The Late Show and so forth.

I reckon those long form reality TV shows is a hugely missed streaming opportunity.

  3. Actually I can see this being a success in high schools and education about Australian films. I remember in high school watching countless vhs and DVDs of the castle, Aussie rules etc, this would actually be a good resource.

  4. Well, they won’t need to make a profit, the deal with the NFSA looks like it’ll come to fruition, and they’ll be eligible for govt funding. Plus whatever support they can rustle up from the private sector in addition to what they’ve already secured from the likes of George Miller, Stephan Elliott, and Claudia Karvan.
