2.07m viewers watched history in the making as Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to ever win a Melbourne Cup.

It proved to be a great story for the media and the 2.07m was a great result for Seven, just shy of the 2.12m who watched in 2014. The numbers don’t include regional viewers, those watching in offices and pubs around the country, nor those on Seven’s new 7Live streaming.

But it also does not factor into primetime share, which the network easily won, thanks to other content such as 800 Words (1.15m) viewers and X Factor (1.1m)

It was even a good night for The Block at 1.03m its best Tuesday this season.

Seven network won with 34.1% then Nine 28.3%, TEN 17.7%, ABC 15.0% and SBS 4.9%.

  1. Maybe I’m missing something but 2.07 million doesn’t sound like a lot from a population of around 24 million. By the way, I was one of the 21+ million who didn’t watch.

  2. David, this is the third year in a row you have used some variant of “The Race that tops the nation” in the title. In 2013 it was “Race that tops the nation”, while last year it was “Race that tops the nation tinged with sadness”. I hope you aren’t too busy to harness your creativity to use some other lame horse-related pun.

      1. I heard that it was mostly horses, which makes sense – you’re prob not going to let a horse into your loungeroom but you might lend it your iPad.
