Foxtel pulls Universal music acts from 5 music channels over commercial disagreement.

Universal music acts including 5 Seconds of Summer, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber have been dropped by music channels including Channel [V] and MAX due to an unresolved dispute  over ‘commercial issues’ with Foxtel.

A spokesperson yesterday told TV Tonight, “Foxtel has been in negotiations with Universal Music for some weeks to resolve a commercially viable agreement to continue to showcase Universal Music artists and music on our five music channels.

“Regrettably we have not resolved our commercial issues, which has forced us to pull all Universal acts from our contemporary music channels. Foxtel Arts and Foxtel’s audio streaming service Foxtel Tunes are unaffected.

“The Foxtel music channels can continue without Universal artists however, it is not our desired outcome.”

Foxtel owns and operates Channel [V], [V] Hits, CMC, Max and Smooth music channels.

  1. I’ve noticed they have also pulled a lot of their film clips of YouTube too. Why do that? I would have thought that would have been one of the best ways to promote artists’ music.

  2. Foxtel really seem to be struggling to stay current at the moment. I mean – the internet and streaming is really hitting them hard. The EPL loss to Optus, shows now going on Netflix rather than on Foxtel, the potential stuff arounds with the NRL. I mean… subscribers can get the content in many ways now. Universal clearly isn’t going to waste their time when they know their videos will be watched by more people on YouTube than on Foxtel. It is a worry for the service… will it even exist in its current format in 10 years or itself be an online service?

  3. Surely this loss will be noticeable during Top 40 countdowns given some of these artists are still releasing new music which are rating.
@ David Knox – do you know the arrangement regarding who owns Smooth? When it launched it was made out that it was a Lauchlan Murdoch venture via his Nova Entertainment/Illyria company, but when it was then taken in house by Foxtel it has led me to wonder who actually owns it (e.g. does Foxtel own the channel and lease the brand from Murdoch, does Murdoch own the network but it is operated by Foxtel in a similar manner to how Foxtel owns Sky News Weather and A-PAC but are operated by Sky News, etc.).
