5th AACTA Awards: winners

Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door dominates in a heavily edited AACTAs broadcast.

TV shows including Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door, Glitch, Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell, and MasterChef were amongst the winners at the 5th AACTA Awards tonight in Sydney.

Seven’s own Peter Allen miniseries dominated TV categories winning all five of the Awards for which it was competing.

But in a broadcast heavy in sponsorship moments, unforgivably the broadcast did not include the Best TV Drama award, given to ABC’s Glitch. It was one of several categories that did not gain airtime in the ceremony which saw Patrick Brammall open formalities at 8:50pm.

Meanwhile Mad Max and The Dressmaker dominated the film categories.

  1. Where is Peter Faiman when you need him….(yes I know mostly 9)….but…
There is a man who knows how to do event TV….maybe he should run classes….does not appear to be anyone else much who can step up to the plate.

  2. So Glitch isn’t even worth nominations for writing, direction, cinematography or any of its main actors. But apart from that those trivial aspects, you can get best drama for the sound track to ep4?

No wonder Seven didn’t broadcast the award, it was an embarrassment for the entire industry. Glitch was the worst local thing on TV, apart from Gallipoli this year.

  3. Such a train wreck of an awards show……
The Home & Away plugs, the Presto plugs, the overly long Cate celebration which thankfully she had the decency to keep her part short and sweet, had to laugh at the “grog” sponsor shoving the bottle of vino as she tried to walk away, huge HA !.
And what was with the very ordinary microphone set up, Magda and the kid from “Boy” couldn’t be seen !!
Happy for the winners, but I would’ve like to have seen Secret River pick up a few.

    1. Agreed. I’m inclined to an awards show, and it was pretty terrible. I was not surprised when I turned on close to 9:00pm that I hadn’t actually missed anything. I gave up not long after Cate’s award, I couldn’t stand so many commercials. And you don’t need three people to provide a lifetime achievement award – really, you don’t.

Seriously producers, it is not that hard to get this right. There are plenty of models around the world offering a template, just pick one. The awards show does not have to be an employment opportunity for every second person with an Equity Card. Broadcasters please note, an awards show does not need to pay for itself – marketing has things such as ‘loss leaders’ and your awards show can be one of them. So annoying.

    2. Yes, agree with all the points made above.
The plugs were over the top and downright embarrassing – you could clearly see the stony looks of disapproval from some well known actors in the audience.

  4. Congrats to all involved with ‘Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door’ for the wins, especially young Ky Baldwin. He put in a great performance & looks like a great upcoming talent to watch.

  5. I never want to see or hear the word Presto again after watching the AACTA’s. I guarantee if Wentworth had won best tv drama it wouldn’t have been cut. Whoever decided to cut the best tv drama category should never work on an awards show again. Ridiculous.
