A new helper for Santa, and a touching tribute from the military were added to the mix of Nine celebrities at this year's Carols by Candlelight.

Nine network faces were joined by rival network performers at last night’s Carols by Candlelight, hosted by Lisa Wilkinson & David Campbell.

ABC2’s Jimmy Giggle and Foxtel’s Sam Moran and Frank Holden performed alongside The Voice coach Delta Goodrem, winner Ellie Drennan, Kids WB presenter Lauren Phillips and Daryl Somers.

Carols favourites Silvie Paladino, Denis Walter, Marina Prior, David Hobson and Anthony Callea (points for campest microphone) added a touch of class under maestro John Foreman.

2015 also saw a new helper for a very earnest Santa Claus, in comedian Marty Fields, plus a particularly touching inclusion of messages from Australian military forces and song from Corporal Deborah O’Toole -who very nearly upstaged more famous singers.

In the commercial breaks Nine took the opportunity to promote some of its upcoming 2016 titles, including revealing Ronan Keating as a new coach on The Voice. But this year plugs also spilled into the main event for Here Come the Habibs, The Voice and the Somers-hosted You’re Back in the Room and a local supermarket sponsor.

Twitter was having its annual field day with cynical Scrooge-like tweets. Hilarious anti-festive reading.

The group finale also saw warm-up man Pete Smith and Humphrey B. Bear (yet again snubbed by the main broadcast) take to the stage.

The broadcast generously included tributes to long-term Carols family members Terry Gill and Adrian Dellevergin.

  1. I have watched this event for many years and attended in person for the very first time, it was really good and truly captures the Xmas spirit! The best part of being there was the fact of no ads, it was a very slick professional production, well done Nine!

  2. My memory of the few parts I watched was the Stan ads for Sherlock. Thanks channel 9 for reminding viewers that your not airing the new Sherlock like your have done so in the past.

  3. I didn’t like the show. I didn’t like the forceful plugs for their new shows. (Ie, “Hey Daryl is doing a new show for Nine next year called Back in the room which should be lots of fun”). People say 7 and Carols in the Domain has a lot of forceful plugs but compared to 9’s By Candlelight, it was pretty clean.

  4. Love this carols. Still giggling about Daryl Somers and his conga and tap dance routine, the usual ones were great and David Hobson smashed Holy City out of the ball park. His best rendition yet.
