Sunrise thrown off Hamilton Island

Privately-owned Hamilton Island says no to media trying to cover Taylor Swift party.

Sunrise reporter Michelle Tapper lucked out when trying to cover a rumoured birthday party for Taylor Swift on Hamilton Island yesterday.

With the island being privately owned she had to resort to a distant report from a boat off shore. Nearly close enough to get a  Justin Bieber-style shot.

“I was met at the airport yesterday by half a dozen security staff,” Tapper told News Corp.

“We were detained and they took all our bags and camera equipment.

“I’ve never encountered anything like this before in 20 years of journalism, this is a pretty outrageous media ban.”

Instead of reporting on the Swift plans, the “ban” became the story itself.

It’s not clear why Sunrise presumed it could gain access without approval.

  1. Wouldn’t waste my time on this show.
Today is a much better to watch then Kosh and crew on Sunrise.
Plus they are all going to be on Carols.
Give me Carols by candlelight any day

  2. sigh… @james original… are you defending sunrise? Was it really that big a story? I mean i know sunrise are buddies with all the celebs, but the difference between sunrise doing this and a normal holiday maker is that they dont work for one of the main media organisations of the country, and i wouldnt be selling a shot of her as well…..iam sure if there was something to promote the celeb would allow them to be there, celebrities do deserve some down time and a right to some privacy on a privately owned island.

  3. Sunrise obviously didnt think. Hey David my mum told me about another incident which happened on the morning show; au.tv.yahoo.com/the-morning-show/video/watch/30237667/live-television-doesnt-always-go-to-plan/#page1

  4. This reminds me of the time when one of James Reyne’s former Australian Crawl band mates Simon Binks had a beef with him over royalties. ACA picked up on the story and sent a film crew and reporter to his house in the Mornington Peninsula (about on hour’s drive south east of Melbourne). He wasn’t home because he had gig in Ballarat that day, you’d think they would have checked the dates on his website first before they rocked up to his house. So then the crew turned up in Ballarat (about a 3 hour drive from Mornington Peninsula) and bailed James Reyne up asking him what he thought about Simon Binks’ claims. Do Australian TV shows really think this is the best way to get a sound bite from a celebrity? I host an interview program on a community radio station and I find that contacting the persons publicist, manager or record label is the best way to line up an interview with someone…

  5. “this is a pretty outrageous media ban.” Um, you were stopped from entering a privately owned place. Try coming to my house, you’ll get a media ban from there too…

      1. Sure its a private island but its also a tourist mecca.
Over 1,000 people live on the island with thousands more staying as tourists.
One is not invited to the island, they book flights and accommodation…just like Sunrise did.
