Threat to pull plug on cricket coverage unlikely to proceed

Tense times between Nine and WIN over affiliation negotiations, but cricket is unlikely to feel the brunt.

Regional coverage of Summer cricket is unlikely to be interrupted, despite no deal between Nine and WIN TV being reached in affiliate negotiations.

The Australian reports a threat to “pull the plug” on coverage was made at an executive meeting earlier this week ahead of a December 31 deadline for increased broadcasting fees and advertisement revenue sharing.

Nine has reportedly demanded an increased share of WIN’s advertising revenue and licensing, at an additional $22-$43 million in fees.

But Nine’s contract with Cricket Australia rests in part on its commitment to screen matches, including the upcoming test and one-day series.

Industry sources expect the current arrangements to continue on a month by month basis until agreement is reached.

  1. @aussiecam…. Besides WIN’s 30min local news and their local ads, you are right…. It’s a done deal with 9 and SCA… WIN pretty soon will be ch10 regionally…. There is nothing… And I mean nothing stopping that…. 9 and WIN won’t agree on new affiliation …. Then soon after will wait and see… I know 9 will put camos in place when they take over SCA regionally as well

  2. Seems to be a drift between Nine and Win. The fact that Nine changed logos for Gem and Go is a sign of dominance by Nine. Apart from their primary stations being named Win or NBN you would think you are watching metro stations. Their local identity is being eroded away. Apart from the local adverts what is so different, there is no local programming and in the case of SCA not even news services.

  3. I’ve checked and the only markets that don’t have a channel owned by either southern cross or 9 are Griffith and east sa where all 3 stations are run by win and Mildura and regional wa where win and prime/gwn are run 9 and 7 respectively and both control half of 10 in that market. There’s also a couple markets where there are stations owned by 9 and southern cross Darwin and Nrth NSW. As a hyperthetical, if 9 signed a deal with southern cross before their existing deal with 10 expired would that make them an affiliate of both 9 and 10 for a short period where they could show programs from 9 and 10

  4. Parliament has been closed until February so the reach rules won’t change at least until then so 9 can’t do their merger with SCA. I wonder if there’s anything stopping them signing SCA as a regional affiliate though

  5. What is to stop Nine coming to an arrangement with Southern Cross to screen the Cricket on Southern Cross stations? The only exception would be in Northern NSW and Darwin where Nine already has station in Southern Cross markets. Southern Cross would simply only break away from the TEN feed which at the time of year has no live sport except for Big Bash Cricket which mostly only screens on alternate days to the international cricket that screens on Nine. Also, Nine would have to come to an arrangement with PRIME for Midura and Golden West viewers. Griffith and Mt Gambier/Loxton may miss out being they are WIN only areas or Nine comes to an arrangement with WIN for those areas only or offers it to SBS or ABC for regional SA only?

    1. No, won’t happen. Nine would not come to an arrangement with any other broadcaster as they would prefer to see WIN cop the flack by not carrying the cricket.
“The Ten Network has renewed its agreement with Southern Cross Media in a deal that will increase the advertising revenue flow to the metropolitan broadcaster. The three-year deal was announced to the ASX in a brief statement (late July 2013). Under the agreement, Southern Cross will pass on up to 35 per cent of its television revenue to Ten, an increase from 29 per cent under the previous agreement”. (SMH)

    2. Because “The Ten Network has renewed its agreement with Southern Cross Media in a deal that will increase the advertising revenue flow to the metropolitan broadcaster. The three-year deal was announced to the ASX in a brief statement (late July 2013)”. (SMH)

        1. Nothing stopping Southern Cross being a dual Ten/Nine affiliate for 6 months until the Ten affiliation expires. As for Griffith, Southern Cross from Wagga can be received in many parts of that area anyway.
