UK actor Nicholas Smith, best known for Are You Being Served?, has died aged 81.
He died in hospital on Sunday.
“It is with great sadness we can confirm that our client, the actor Nicholas Smith, passed away yesterday,” said a statement from his agent, Michelle Braidman Associates. “He was a lovely man and a terrific actor. He will be much missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family.”
Smith played Mr Cuthbert Rumbold on Are You Being Served? from 1972, with Smith as Mr Rumbold, the manager of the fictional department store Grace Brothers. Smith was a fixture on the show until its end in 1985, and was the last surviving member of the original cast.
Other appearances included Doctor Who, The Saint and The Champions.

Mr. Rumbold was so oblivious to those stunning secretaries of his. Still one of the funniest programs from that era. R.I.P., Mr. Smith.
Sad end of an era, he was great in that show, did not know of Trevor Bannisters passing, he was the funniest.
I feel old now
Sad that the whole cast are all gone now, even the younger ones.
One of the upsides of repeated viewings of classic shows like this, was the opportunity to enjoy the less showy performers and Nicholas’s ‘Rumbold’ was one of those. Often officious but invariably getting the wrong end of the stick, his presence was understated. He had all those scene stealing hams to deal with! He made his mark.
