Pop singer Stevie Wright, best known as lead singer of The Easybeats, has died, aged 68.

He reportedly died at Moruya Hospital on the NSW south coast on Sunday night.

“It is with great sadness that we commemorate the passing of Stevie Wright,” an Alberts Record statement read.

“Stevie died peacefully with son Nick by his side, on 27 December 2015 aged 68. Born in 1947 in Leeds he came to Australia at the age of 9.”

Described as “Australia’s first international pop star” he fronted The Easybeats, whose songs including Friday on My Mind, Sorry and She’s So Fine were hits in Australia and overseas.

After the band’s glory Wright enjoyed a solo career, best known for the iconic hit single Evie (Parts I, II and III) before a well-documented addiction to alcohol and drugs.

At the height of his career, Wright performed on Australian TV shows including Bandstand, Countdown, The Aunty Jack Show, The Ernie Sigley Show, whilst songs were used on soundtracks including Love Child, Paper Giants, Stepfather of the Bride, Long Way to the Top and Blood + Thunder: The Sound of Alberts -featuring heavily in the first episode of the ABC documentary.

A 2013 episode of Australian Story Wright told the ABC if he had his time over there are many things he would not have done.

“I wouldn’t pick up any hard drugs. I wouldn’t do it. And it can destroy. It does destroy. Because it’s all inside anyway – all, all the things in the mind and the power that you think the drugs are gonna add to, and they don’t at all, they take everything away,” he said.

ABC will repeat Blood + Thunder: The Sound of Alberts 9pm tonight and tomorrow.
