Key Showtime titles The Affair, Ray Donovan, Penny Dreadful will remain with Foxtel, following yesterday’s announcement of a deal between Stan and Showcase.

A Foxtel spokesperson confirmed to TV Tonight it has life of series rights for the three dramas.

Amended: All three shows will have an SVOD premiere on Presto. There is an 18 month holdback after Foxtel before they can play on Stan.

Foxtel also has  library rights to many other Showtime titles it will retain.

Stan is already showing Billions with Twin Peaks to come in 2017.

But the surprise announcement yesterday also means Stan will eventually get further SVOD rights to shows such as Dexter, Californication and House of Lies plus CBS SVOD rights for shows including Madam Secretary, Limitless, Elementary, Scorpion, Under the Dome and Extant (broadcast rights will remain with TEN).

  1. Welcome to the new reality of TV entertainment. No doubt Foxtel will be playing a tougher competitive game in the future which in a smallish consumer market like Australia might prove commercially counterproductive in the long term.

  2. So those shows won’t be on Tenplay anymore? Does SVOD rights include ‘catch up’ after broadcast, or will Stan get each series after broadcast on TEN?

    1. You’re right – the BBC deal with Foxtel saw only a 12 month delay for FTA. I guess it’s the price of doing business in this ever changing landscape.

      1. Just depends on what Foxtel and Showtime agreed to. 12 months is fairly common.

Stan getting SVOD rights to stuff after they have had their exclusive first run period isn’t novel. Shows have usually been available to anyone who wants them after that. It would be significant if the SVOD were only going to be in Stan i.e. Netflix wouldn’t ever be able to get them.

  3. I was wondering yesterday how this would affect Boxsets/Foxtel Anytime but if Foxtel’s library rights aren’t affected they should be fine. It’ll just be new series which from now on if they’re not on TEN they’ll be on Stan.
