Veteran actress Lois Ramsey, best known for Aussie soaps including The Box and Prisoner has died aged 93.

She played tea lady Mrs. Hopkins on The Box from 1974 – 1977, two roles on Prisoner as dotty social worker Agnes Forster and inmate Ettie Parslow -all memorable for her distinctive voice.

“I’ve been playing old ladies since I was 47,” she later said.

Her long list of other TV credits included The Mavis Bramston Show, Riptide, Homicide, The Young Doctors, The Sullivans, A Town Like Alice, Return to Eden, Carson’s Law, GP, A Country Practice, The Harp in the South, E Street, Mother and Son, Water Rats, Blue Heelers, Home and Away, Grass Roots, Always Greener, All Saints and Rake.

Film credits included Undercover, Road to Nhill, River Street, Boytown and Crackerjack. There were also stage credits including Summer of the Seventeenth Doll.

Born in Adelaide during the Depression, she wrote a biography on her life living through war-time Sydney to the present, titled Knit Your Way to Hollywood.

Last year she attended an anniversary screening of The Box feature film with other cast members, viewing the film for the very first time.

TV historian Andrew Mercado said at the time, “She will have the best seat in the house and deservedly so too.”
