Veteran broadcaster Dennis Cometti has spoken about his retirement, in his final year commentating TV Sport.
“I’m getting rather old these days and not so much tired of footy but certainly tired of travelling,” Cometti told The West Australian.
“I think I’ve worked out, with the help of a couple of other people, I’ve spent about six years of my life living in hotels.
“That seems a waste. I don’t think there’s any chance this will change, so it is my final year and I’m looking forward to it.”
In 2014 Cometti indicated he would retire at the end of the 2016 season.
He first signed with Seven in 1986 staying until 2001 and re-joined the network in 2007. He has been voted Television Caller of the Year by the Australian Football Media Association on multiple occasions.
“Probably my ideal is just to get a rug and go and sit on the bank at Joondalup or something,” he said. “Watch a grassroots game of footy again.”

I still get goosebumps every time I see and hear Dennis’ call of Kieren Perkins 1500m final from the Atlanta olympics. Dare I say it was centimetre perfect. I hope he does the swimming at the Rio olympics this year.
i don’t like Basil either. I like Dennis Commetti- I prefer him to Bruce. I remember Dennis commentating on 9. one of the best calls Dennis did in my opinion was in Sydney 2000 and he did the call for the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay
Massive hole in the 7 commentary team. Here’s hoping that they find someone currently outside their setup (Hi Anthony Hudson) to replace him. I’d hate to see 7’s commentary team once Dennis and Bruce retire, Id hate for it to go down the same path as 9 has after Tony/Richie/Bill (virtually) are no longer there.
Bruce was once a good AFL commentator back in the 1990s but this year he has gone way down. Time to retire. Seven & FOX really needs to make changes to the commentary lineup asap.
Dennis and Bruce (even if he’s gone downhill) are still easily the best two commentators 7 have. This is the problem.
i enjoyed Dennis Cometti’s commentry style. Still do mostly. during the 80s and 90s he was more serious and didn’t crack jokes. During his time at Nine he began being more lighthearted and cracked jokes. i don’t mind him and Bruce together. I think he will not stay away from the commentary box long he will be snapped up by Fox Footy and just call West Australian matches. He still remains as one of the best insightful callers in the game. Love the tone of his voice. He will be missed. Brian Taylor on the other hand needs to go away. 7 need Anthony Hudson.
For me he’s the best commentator we’ve ever had, but having seen him on many flights to and from Perth I’m not surprised to hear he’s calling it a day. Maybe 7 or Foxtel could convince him to just do the Perth games for another season or two, but that’s selfishness on my behalf I guess.
Well done Dennis, you’ll never be replaced. I hope you enjoy watching your beloved Cardi’s on the grass for many years to come.
Would be great if Foxtel offered him the Perth game on Fox Footy to do then there is no travel involved!
So one is to assume Basil Zempalis.will fill he’s spot?
No Not Basil
I’ve enjoyed listening to Commetti back in my childhood days from Channel 7 and 9. He was a terrific commentator & I adored him.
Shame Dennis Cometti is a good commentator when not coupled with Bruce McAvaney, if only McAvaney would retire and take Hamish McLachlan with him leaving Cometti with the others.
Love Dennis and will really miss his voice, observations and quips. His’getting old’ reminds me of a time I saw him making his way to the commentary box at ANZ – more accurately, he was trudging but still had time for a smile and G’day mate.
As A Western Australian, finally we won’t have to put up with this piece of dribble.
He would have go down as one of the most disgraceful and biased football commentators.
Music to my ears.
P.S. Only 2 commentators are worse than him, Eddie McQuire and Basil Zempalis.
Wow, talk about an ‘against the grain’ opinion
He is widely acknowledged as the best caller, so by definition there are actually dozens of callers worse than him
Can’t stand Basil, he really puts me off.
I know Basil Zempilas was a fantastic news journalist at 7 News but his AFL commentary has gone way below average. In fact Eddie McGuire is worse than listening to Zempilas – brings nothing but hot air.
