FOX wants more X-Files says Chris Carter

"The last negotiations took about five months, so it could be a while," says X-Files creator.

With the final episode of The X-Files ending on a cliffhanger, creator Chris Carter has addressed the question of future episodes.

He told the Hollywood Reporter negotiations for this season took 5 months, but hopefully things wouldn’t take as long next time round.

THR: Are we going to see more of The X-Files on Fox?
CC: They’re going to ask for more. The ratings were very good. They were happy with the show. I talked to (FOX TV Group CEO) Dana Walden today. She said they’d very much like more, but nothing’s being negotiated yet.

THR: Did you talk about timing at all?
CC: It was casual. She said, “No pressure. We’d love to do this. We liked the way it worked out.” So there’s an appetite for more in the future; it’s just a matter of figuring out how to get it done. before we figure out how to do this.

THR: There was speculation with the addition of Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell that there might be some kind of spinoff. Have you talked about that at all?
CC: No, we haven’t. I really love those guys. They’re terrific actors and excellent to work with. It would be nice to include them. But at the same time, we didn’t make series deals with them. I can’t imagine they’re not going to be scooped up and be somewhat unavailable to us. It will just be practical about how we’re able to work with them in the future.

THR: That was the issue with getting David and Gillian for these six episodes. Have you talked to them recently about doing it again?
CC: I have been speaking with David pretty regularly. I think he’s game. I have spoken to Gillian less frequently, but I believe she would be game. So I’m just working around their busy schedules. They both have families. It’s another practical matter.

The season finale airs 8:30pm Sunday on TEN.

  1. I never watched it when it was really popular in the 90’s because I was actually scared I’d get scared (I was born in ’88 so I was young…), anyway, I’ve found it to be fairly enjoyable. The episode with garbage zombie monster thing was the best imo.
I’ll also note that in the first episode it was like Gillian and David were having a competition on how many times they could say each other’s characters’ name in an hour… It was extraordinarily off putting tbh.

  2. I’m always up for more seasons of shows coming back to TV after being off the air for many years, as long as the original actors return. but they should never ever finish a season with a cliffhanger. you never know what could happen, like one of the actors dying.

    1. They always do that, and then the ad goes on high rotation. Just look at how many times the OJ mini (sorry Event series) is getting advertised. By the time it gets shown you wouldn’t even have to watch the show.

This is the same with Nine with the Habibs. The commercials are actually better than the full episode.

  3. Of course Fox want’s more, apart from Empire the rest of their lineup is rating terribly.

The episodes have been getting better as the series goes along. But without Mulder and Scully it wouldn’t be popular. Miller and Einstein were use to explore the archtypes of the characters and how they interact.

  4. My fav of the new series was the 3rd one, very enjoyable. But I wouldn’t mind some more, even if it’s a hand full of eps every year, maybe they could do a few feature length ones next time?
