It was a good night for new Aussie TV with both Here Come the Habibs! and Wanted attracting good audiences on Nine and Seven, respectively.

Here Come the Habibs! pulled 1.25m viewers and Wanted drew 1.18m viewers.

Nine’s result was against the might of My Kitchen Rules which grew to another season high of 1.88m viewers -an impressive result for both. Seven may have been hoping for a stronger debut for its drama given the lead-in, but it is on par with Winter‘s debut of 1.13m a year ago in a similar MKR playout.

Both new shows also attracted plenty of love on Twitter last night too, although opinions were a little divided over tickling their comedy bones.

Seven network won the night with a 34.7% share then Nine 26.7%, TEN 18.0%, ABC 15.4% and SBS 5.2%.

Elsewhere last night for Seven was Seven News (1.02m / 993,000), Home and Away (890,000), The Chase (558,000 / 385,000) and Bones (382,000).

Following the Habibs for Nine were Nine News (1.00m / 995,000), A Current Affair (842,000), Big Bang (793,000 / 775,000), Lip Sync Battle (645,000) and Hot Seat (453,000). Movie: Zoolander was 245,000.

I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here was 766,000 for TEN. The Project was 628,000 / 408,000, NCIS was 521,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 505,000 and NCIS: LA was 369,000.

ABC News was best for TEN with 810,000 then 7:30 (565,000), Catalyst (535,000) a repeat of Countdown: Do Yourself a Favour (423,000) and Countdown to Life: The Extraordinary Making of You (397,000).

On SBS it was Secrets of the Scottish Manor Houses (234,000), the return of Insight (175,000), SBS World News (142,000) and One Born Every Minute (125,000).

Shaun the Sheep topped multichannels with 225,000.

The Morning Show: 125,000 / 109,000
Today Extra: 128,000
Studio 10: 79,000 / 44,000

  1. I loved the Habibs….smarty pants female neighbour…who thinks the neighbours are one step up from cavemen….and keeps getting proved wrong….and the harried hubby….who actually just wants to be neighbourly….
If people want not stop …rolling laughter….watch stand up…
I was on SBS…both before and after the Habibs.

  2. i enjoyed MRK. didnt watch all of it but i did enjoy what i watched. I love Zana’s facial expressions if she played poker she would not be good because competitors would be able to tell what kind of hand she has. I didnt watch the HCTH but did flick over a bit and caught a glimps of Tahir Bilgic playing the role of a courier. I think the ratings will fall in time. The question for Nine is, what is the benchmark or the base level that they are expecting from this show?

  3. The Habibs didn’t grab me.It could have been funnier & perhaps the producers could have beefed it up a touch.I won’t waste another 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of ads

  4. I had a couple of LOL moments, the guy who played the next-door neighbour was great. I’ll give it another episode to settle in, but they really tried to pack too much in to the first ep trying to “set the scene”. David, Is the next door daughter the same girl from Tangle?

  5. Found both Wanted and The Habibs to be real letdown.
Certainly didn’t live up to a the hype.
Wanted was pretty weak, with implausible, clunky storylines and forgettable acting so far – no light and shade, just poorly executed goodies and baddies like one of those dated old Aus. cop shows from the 70s. Winter was far better and that was pretty average at best.
As someone else commented, the Blue Mountains scenery was the best thing about it.
Found the Habibs to be a pretty feeble attempt at “comedy” as well – a good premise but just not well executed. A poor man’s “Pizza” and nowhere near as good as “The Moodys.”

  6. Personally, I find cultural stereotyping and fish-out-of-water “comedy” boring, uninspired and unoriginal, so didn’t tune into channel 9. We watched Countdown to Life which was phenomenal. Probably the most well crafted and outright interesting science doc I’ve seen in years. Well done ABC for providing an intelligent counterpoint to the commercial offerings.

  7. Strong audience numbers for the premiere episode of a new series really only means that the marketing has been effective. It is the ratings for the subsequent episodes which will tell the story.

    1. Coming soon to 76Flix The Last of the Australians, Kingswood Country and Acropolis Now, while for the first time on commercial TV Pizza, Housos, Swift and Shift Couriers, Bogan Pride and Upper Middle Class Bogan coupled with repeats of everyone’s favourite Bogan Hunters.

  8. If Here Come the Habibs is the best the programmers at nine can come up with, then I feel sorry for the script writers in this country, it was lousy tv. I watched about 10 mins of it and then deleted it from my pvr, I won’t be tuning in again. Interesting to see how it rates in coming weeks, I suspect the ratings will drop off after people checked out 1 or 2 episodes of this rubbish and then switching over to other programming on tuesday nights.

  9. HCTH was better than the promo made it look, but it was still just basically domestic melodrama with a lot of shouting and hand-waving. It’s not exactly spleen-rupturingly funny. Riffing on a bunch of cultural stereotypes is only funny for a short while. But at least Darren Gilshenan brought some comic relief to things. Definitely not four stars.

Re Wanted – you’d think that after several decades as an actor, Rebecca Gibney would have developed more than one facial expression.

  10. I expect 98% of the Habib viewers to not come back next week. I can’t believe I actually watched it, I knew it would be terrible, and it was on Nine for God’s sake. What was I thinking?
I only realised recently that Wanted and Winter were not the same program. When you have the same lead in your shows and unimaginative titles, it’s an easy mistake. Had planned to watch it but didn’t in the end.

  11. David it has been a while since I have taken notice of the morning shows ratings – is that an unusual high for Studio 10 or has it been averaging around 80k lately? If it’s the latter TEN have got to be cheering about that, given last year I think it was averaging around 50k with the competitors around 180k.

      1. Oh bummer. Thanks for clarifying. Well at least the numbers are still good regardless. Besides, personally I still think Studio 10 is the best of the three shows :P.

  12. HCTH a bit over the top, but worth watching. Channel 9 have had a disastrous start to the year. Who the hell is their programmer? They obviously pay him/her too much!

  13. Habibs was absolutely terrible.

I would hazard a guess that if you looked at the numbers closely there may have been 1.2 million up to the first break and then it would have dropped like a boulder off a cliff.

It was pitched as a comedy and it was just not funny – The story was weak and he acting was really ordinary. All you could say was it was embarrassing.

Habibs will be dumped or on Go within 3 weeks.

Nine would be very nervous atm, Australia’s Got talent has bombed again, Habibs wont last more than 2 weeks in it’s current slot and what else have they got, Big Bang, Reno Rumble or another Block. It is going to be a long and poor performing first half of 2016 for them.

Agencies and buyers will be licking their lips, lucky they’ve got Nine Life for all the Bonus and make goods they are going to have to find…..

      1. Hi David, I asked a mate to run some numbers and Habibs was a stinker, it started strong and as mentioned below had a good first 15 mins but it lost around a 3rd of it’s audience in the back half:

        Metro 5 Cap City

        “NINE Five City TTL PPL”
        “20:30:00 – 20:44:59” “934,572”
        “20:45:00 – 20:59:59” “1,229,633”
        “21:00:00 – 21:14:59” “1,310,295”
        “21:15:00 – 21:29:59” “995,551”
        “21:30:00 – 21:44:59” “650,924”

If it dropped by 315K in the last 1/2 hour obviously there was a large turn off factor. There is no way it will get 1.2 Million next week, if lucky it might get 300-400K then you will definitely see it on 9Go and another Big Bang repeat on 9…..

        1. Go Australia! Cut those tall poppies down! Even if it means investing time in ‘running some numbers’ on it – nobody deserves success in this country, it makes my blood boil!

        2. @Roughneck – you’re mistaken. The 315K drop to which you refer occurred during the 15 minute period (not ½ hour) when Here Come the Habibs was finishing and people were presumably switching over to something else or turning the TV off.

I agree that it is highly unlikely that it will get 1.2M next week – it’s pretty standard for a new show to drop a fair bit in weeks 2 and 3, even if it’s popular. However, I disagree strongly with your predicted 300-400K. I think it will be closer to a little under a million.

    1. I don’t think it was fair to say that it was not funny…. you may of not found it funny.. but I bet there are viewers beside yourself who did find it funny. I enjoyed it. I hope it gets better in the remaining 5 eps.
Yes ..we have the right to express our feeling and comments..but I think its more honest to say ” I did not find it funny”

oh..you might want to check your comments before sending for display. “The story was weak and he acting was really ordinary” lol

    2. @Roughneck – that’s not how the ratings work. 1.25 M is the average across the show’s timeslot. In fact, the minute by minute numbers actually increased during the first 15 minutes.

  14. Watched Wanted, jury is out still.. I found it boring.. Will give it one last chance to pick up next week or else I’m out. Will watch Habibs when I get a spare chance later today/

also, “ABC News was best for TEN with 810,000” I don’t think ABC News would like being aired on Ten.

  15. have to wait 2 or 3 more episodes to see where both shows are at. positive for nine was the increase from from lead in. how many episodes hclh will there be?

  16. I thought it good to support local drama so I gave Wanted a go…. What a load of tripe, none of it was believable but of course most mundane Australians will lap it up and call it amazing…..

    1. It was good to see Rebecca Gibney play the world’s oldest living checkout chick. Apart from that it was the usual conspiracy theory TV the writers think we’re interested in. Nice shots of the Blue Mountains, though.

  17. I enjoyed Wanted, bit of a suspension of belief needed at times but good overall. Still think it would attract higher ratings with an earlier start of about 8:30-8:40 but MKR seems to be seven’s main concern.
