Someone tell Patty and Selma…

CBS is proceeding with its Pilot reboot of MacGyver, the 80s action series that ran for 7 seasons starring Richard Dean Anderson.

The new version will following a 20-something MacGyver recruited into a clandestine organisation where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening. It will also show he acquired some of his skill set.

Aussie James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) will executive produce and direct the pilot while original executive producer Henry Winkler is also on board, in some capacity.

Paramount Television previously attempted a spinoff series, Young MacGyver, starring Supernatural‘s Jared Padalecki, but it did not proceed. Last year a crowdsourcing competition asked for pitches for a new MacGyver character -as a woman.

The news follows recent revivals and reboots including The X-Files, Prison Break and 24.

  1. That is exactly what i was thinking when i read the headline. Looks like CBS just peeved off the wrong MacGyver fans, lol. But seriously this is really dicy, because it could easily fail. If its a limited run like X-Files or Fuller House than it could work. I know i have a few of my fav shows that i loved and would want back, but its just too risky and if not done properly could damage the brand.

  2. I’ve long wanted them to have a sequel series (maintaining continuity) with a woman as lead, specifically Katee Sackhoff as Agnes MacGyver.

I presume that isn’t going to happen if it’s a reboot.

    1. They could do the same with Scorpion, or maybe all the flaws in Scorpion is what made them quit, there’s only so many viewer requests you could take I would assume and they may have been inundated over Scorpion.
