Episodes and formers Friends star Matt LeBlanc is joining the revamped Top Gear for the BBC.

It will be the first time the show has ever had a non-British host in its 39-year history.

LeBlanc began his association with the BBC for sitcom Episodes in 2010. He joins presenter Chris Evans immediately on production, with other cast members to be confirmed shortly.

LeBlanc has appeared as a two-time guest on the show and the fastest celebrity to date around the Top Gear track in its reasonably priced car segment. He recently presented highlights series Top Gear: The Races for BBC.

“Matt’s a lifelong fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining Top Gear. Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road trip ideas. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year,” said Evans.

Matt LeBlanc said, “As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter. What a thrill!”

Alan Tyler, the BBC’s Acting Controller for Entertainment Commissioning added: “Matt is a class act and a brilliant signing for Top Gear. He is a self-confessed car fanatic with a passion for the programme. I’m really looking forward to watching Chris and Matt bring the all new show to our audiences.”

Top Gear will air in Australia on BBC Knowledge in May.

  1. I honestly don’t know what to make of this. I like Le Blanc (massive Friends fan here) and perhaps I haven’t fully realised his petrol-head credentials but I ain’t quite convinced he’s the right choice yet. I’ll give the new show a shot though and see what happens. Anyone expecting it to be the same as the last mob is setting themselves up for utter disappointment though so I’m doing in with an open mind.

    1. I’ll give it a chance, I agree it won’t be like the show we all know and love but hey I also like the US version which has very different hosts but the same vibe.

Do wonder what happened to the other hosts that were rumored and who will be number 3?

  2. This is basically confirming what I suspected was already in the works. I think that The Races was a test of Le Blanc’s suitability and acceptance to the Top Gear audience. He’s a good get.
