Long-running US procedural Law & Order: SVU has been renewed for an 18th season.

NBC has extended its deal with prolific producer Dick Wolf through to 2020, which also includes a second season for recent procedural, Chicago Med.

They follow recent renewals for Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. while upcoming series Chicago Law is in development.

Mariska Hargitay also sounds like she is poised to return, tweeting “So honored 2 have another season to bring u #SVU.We r proud of the work we do and especially grateful 2 our incredible fans #ThankYOU #SVU18″

“Dick Wolf is a without a doubt one of the greatest producers in the history of dramatic television,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said. “The Law & Order legacy would have been enough to set him apart from all the rest, but the Chicago franchise now kicks him into the stratosphere. He has been a defining voice of NBC for over a generation, and he is most welcome at this company forever.”

“I’ve been in the same office, with the same phone number, for 30 years. I’m glad people won’t have to learn a new one,” Wolf said. “Staying was really a foregone conclusion. My partnership with Bob has been the best relationship I’ve ever had with the head of a network. He has also assembled a great team of executives at both the network and the studio who make it possible for the Wolf Entertainment team to turn out multiple shows. It is truly a synergistic group effort that makes me enormously excited about both the present and the future.”

SVU returns to TEN on February 11th.

      1. There’s an actor on Coronation Street who has been with the show since its very first episode in 1960. That’s 56 years playing the same character! (Surely he’s in the record books for that one). There are many other characters on the show that’ve been around since the 60s, 70s and 80s.

There are certainly worse jobs out there, so if these people love what they do, then all the power to them, I say.

    1. I always wonder that. I love the show and have watched every episode but I do often think about how she manages to keep enthusiastic about some very repetitive storylines. I think it could be a lot to do with her taking such an interest in the subjects that have been raised – for instance she’s been an advocate to have the backlog of rape kits tested which she learned was an issue when they did an episode about the problem.

I hope they start to write Olivia with a softer hand soon, she’s been coming off cold and ‘bitchy’ this season which she hasn’t before, she was always strong and confident but also very fair and not condensing. I think it’s a shame that they seem to unable to continue to write her as a kind person as she moves up the police ranks – to me it’s continuing the stereotype of depicting women in powerful positions as being harsh and unlikeable.
