Returning: Call the Midwife

Get out the tinsel, Call the Midwife xmas special is airing later this month on ABC.

I have an awful feeling Call the Midwife is going head to head with Downton Abbey in a few weeks time.

ABC is playing the 2014 Christmas special, featuring Vanessa Redgrave, at 8:30pm Sunday February 21st.

Seven also has Downton Abbey waiting in the wings, which will probably run on Sunday nights once Molly wraps -being February 21.

If you have not seen Call the Midwife on Pay TV you’ll need to get PVRs at the ready to see both.

UPDATE: I’m told they will not be clashing after all!

This special episode opens in 2005 with Jennifer Worth at home preparing for Christmas with husband Philip, and reminiscing about the friends and colleagues of her youth at Nonnatus House.

Festive cheer is in plentiful supply as Poplar readies itself for Christmas. It is 1959 and rehearsals are underway for the Sunday School Christmas concert. While Chummy tries to choreograph dancing snowflakes, Trixie sets to work designing a Father

Christmas outfit for Fred to wear. Chummy is enlisted to help run a poorly managed mother and baby home and with Patsy’s help succeeds in bringing some Christmas joy into the residents’ lives.

Cynthia is drawn deeply into a case concerning two former residents of a Victorian mental hospital who have been left to fend for themselves and are barely coping.

There is but one question in all of their hearts, though it goes unspoken – what will 1960 bring?

Stars Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, Charlotte Ritchie, Linda Bassett, Ben Caplan, Stephen McGann, Cliff Parisi, Vanessa Redgrave

8:30pm Sunday February 21 on ABC.

  1. Former Home and Away actress Celeste Dodwell (Melody Jones) guests in Series 5 Episode 5. She’s fantastic and a brill actress. Celeste really deserves an award for her performance as ‘Roseanne Dawley’.

  2. So I’m just countimg up how many shows I planned to watch that will be on Sunday nights. There’s Supergirl, The X Files, Molly, Doc Martin, Downtn Abbey and Call the Midwives, and if there’s a Sixty Minutes episode that sparks an interest. Oh boy!

  3. How very frustrating. The abc have yet to replay season 3, i have been waiting since last summer when the replayed season 2. They usually do this before they show the next “new”season, but now it dosn’t look like they will.

    1. ABC replayed either season 2 or 3 during the afternoons recently. Check your local library for the DVD, which is how I watched season 4, or Stan/ Netflix.

      1. I think it was season 2. They played the Xmas special from between seasons 2 & 3. I came late to this show. If I’d I’d known they wern’t gonna show S03 i would have sourced over summer when there was more time.
