Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016: winners

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held in Los Angeles yesterday with Orange is the New Black the big winner in the TV comedy categories.

It won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

In contrast to the diversity concerns of the Academy Awards, there were also wins by Idris Elba, Viola Davis and Queen Latifah, whilst Jeffrey Tambor won for playing transgender in Transparent.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler presented Carol Burnett with SAG’s Life Achievement honour.

82 year old Burnett spoke about her pioneering variety The Carol Burnett Show in 1967.

“At first the network didn’t want me to do it. They wanted me to do a half-hour sitcom called Here’s Agnes,” she recalled, saying the executives told her, “Carol, no, no, no, no, all the comedy-variety shows are hosted by men. … It’s really not for a gal. Comedy-variety is a man’s game.” On stage, Burnett shook her head with a smile, and simply said, “No.”
