Warning: major casting change.

UK period drama Call the Midwife shows no signs of slowing down in the UK with its Season 5 finale pulling 9.2m viewers -the highest rated show on the BBC so far this year.

The good news is the show looks like being around for some time yet.

“We have always said, we will run for as long as the people want to see it,” say star Stephen McGann.

McGann, who is married to creator Heidi Thomas adds, “Heidi says, ‘Bringing women’s stories to the screen is a privilege. I’ll go on for as long as they want me. I’m up for it.’

“And we’re all up for it.

“If people want to see it, that’s it. We’ll still be there.”

The big viewing numbers are doubtless a response to the final appearance of Pam Ferris (Sister Evangelina), who departs the series.

“Making the decision to leave Call the Midwife was a wrench,” she said.

“Because I then became involved with telling the story to the best of my ability, there was no time to feel regret.

“I’ll miss my friends on set – in front of and behind the camera – and I’ll miss my habit which is so well worn and comfortable. But I shan’t miss my wimple!”
