Freeview is launching a mobile app with all Live streaming and catch up content, finally merging Free to Air networks onto one platform, years after it promised a single catch-up destination.

“This extends the FreeviewPlus on television onto mobile and the experience of viewers is they’ll be able to stream live TV content and be able to watch catch up content,” Freeview CEO Liz Ross tells AdNews.

“Strategically, the whole mission of Freeview and why networks invest in it is to maintain the dominance of the platform and to expand it across new devices. We’re delivering a service that will be anywhere, anytime and on any device.”

No date has been announced for its availability.

Meanwhile Seven’s chief digital officer Clive Dickens has become its second chairman, succeeding Kim Dalton, while SBS has also returned to Freeview as a member.

  1. Like all Freeview offerings – I am sceptical about its implementation and the timing is indeterminate but will about 15 years too late……

  2. Live streaming? So does that mean all channels will be available via a live stream? Or only the channels currently being offered: 7, 7TWO, 7mate, 7Flix, Racing.com, Nine, News24?

Also, Dave, do you have any news on when 9Now will be offering all channels via the live streaming and if all the 9Now channels will be available with HD right away or later down the track?

  3. I bet the regional networks are really pleased to hear about this. Still, this is Freeview we’re talking about, so it’s unlikely to happen this year.

How many people did you say are watching HbbTV? Numbers “not available”? Thought so.

  4. I wonder if it will be any good? We have a brand new TV and seem to only get Freeview on ABC and SBS. I wanted to watch The Living Room over the weekend and I had to resort to Tenplay on the iPad as I couldn’t navigate how to access Freeview or Tenplay on my new Samsung TV.

    1. You must have an LG TV. Plus7 and TenPlay both say they require flash. IView and SBS ON Demand stream perfectly. I wanted to watch You’re The Worst and ended up on my desktop.
