Vikings fans are going to be getting a whole lot more.

Irish / Canadian drama Vikings has been renewed for a fifth season of 20 episodes.

That comes on top of the 20 episodes for Season 4, currently airing its first block of 10 episodes on SBS.

The History channel has also announced Jonathan Rhys Meyers will join the series in 2017.

“The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television,” said Jana Bennett, President and General Manager of History.

Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Myers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of Roots.”

A second block of 10 episodes will air on SBS later this year.

  1. Pirates > Hannibal but Vikings renewed so Vikings > Pirates?

That is great news. Have been enjoying this latest season.

Pretty sure “Meyers” is correct spelling.

      1. Thanks. “Myers” is the more common spelling but you’d think that the publicist (or whomever) would have checked (what am I saying? Of course nobody checks anything these days, present company excepted). Agree with leaving quote as is.

  2. Vikings is a much better show than Game of Thrones in my opinion and Vikings doesn’t get the hype or exposure as GoT. Jonathon Rhys Myers from Tudors should fit in well into the show. I can see him being a king just like he did with Henry the 8th on Tudors.

    1. I agree. I find Vikings much more compelling then Game Of Thornes and to MuchoTB you have to get past the pilot, the more you watch it will start drawing you in. It is more subtle and nuanced and to me it gives it greater depth compared to Game of Thornes which in my opinion is a little shallow. I think it is the female characters that really make Vikings shine. They have no equivalent to the Game of Thrones women as the Viking characters are multi faceted and their story arcs create real character evolution.
