Thursday Night NRL gives Nine the edge

Ratings: Sport is back in primetime. Who's a happy network then?

The return of NRL could not come fast enough for Nine. After three weeks where its only breakout hit has been a new sitcom Sport is back to help lift its performance. With weekend games and Footy Shows planted on 2 nights it will help the week overall.

Thursday Night NRL drew 581,000 in 2 cities (Syd: 334,000 / Bris: 247,000 and another 65,000 on GEM), helping Nine to win the night with a 29.7% share then Seven 27.7%, TEN 19.0%, ABC 17.8% and SBS 5.8%.

Nine News (985,000 / 961,000) topped the night for Nine followed by A Current Affair (675,000 in 4 cities), NRL (581,000 in 2 cities) and Hot Seat (503,000). Inside Story was 277,000 in 3 cities, Kings Cross ER was 252,000 in 3 cities, and An Hour to Save Your Life was 182,000 in 3 cities.

Seven News (928,000 / 907,000 was best for Seven then Home and Away (708,000), Movie: Pretty Woman (548,000), The Chase (518,000 / 321,000) and The Big Bang Theory (419,000).

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here was 676,000 for TEN but all other shows were under 500,000. The Project was 476,000 / 397,000, Law and Order: SVU was 425,000 / 220,000 and TEN Eyewitness News was 422,000.

ABC News won its slot with 759,000 then 7:30 (685,000), Jack Irish (581,000), Hatch Match & Dispatch (515,000) and No Offence (281,000).

Food Safari Fire (240,000), What’s the Right Diet For You? (174,000), Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook: London (170,000), The Bridge (120,000) and SBS World News (98,000) comprised SBS night.

Shaun the Sheep ruled multichannels at 247,000.

  1. No tackle count and no meters gained, thanks 9. It seems to have been fixed for the Sea Eagles game.
    All that is needed now is to get Vossy back as commentator.

  2. Do Ch9 see a white ball at the end of the tunnel? Pretty Woman: do viewers have mass amnesia or is it “anything but sport”? PW is a good movie but I almost know it word perfect and it’s on my PVR, without the ad breaks. Memo to Seven execs: It would’ve looked better in HD.

  3. Where are all the 1st run TV shows? The ones that have been shown in USA 6 months ago? Pretty woman, you have got to be kidding. Expect that on a multichannel.

  4. Last night was the first time Fox Sports Simulcast Live the Channel 9 NRL game with their own commentators. I saw it got 210K viewers did this dent Channel 9’s figures based on years previous? What is the feeling on this new battle forming?
