Today‘s Sylvia Jeffreys and The Project‘s Peter Helliar were hosts of the 2016 TV Week Logie Awards nominations event yesterday afternoon at Crown in Melbourne.

TV stars, producers, publicists and media were out in force to hear the lucky names revealed for the 58th Logies. They were rewarded with surprises including Lee Lin Chin making the shortlist for the Gold after The Feed‘s aggressive social media campaign. Stan also scored for No Activity and Foxtel drew its most-ever nominations. Aside from SBS, all other networks drew 19 or more nominations.

Pete Helliar joked that with both Carrie Bickmore & Waleed Aly being nominated for Gold, the Logies could benefit from an “Intruder” this year.

“Just a Wildcard. I’m not mentioning any names…. Peter Helliar,” he joked.

Damon Herriman announced the winners of three New Talent categories. Herriman was himself a category winner in 1981.

“1981? And I haven’t been nominated since!” he declared. “Enjoy the moment because it may not come around again!”

Seven swept the three categories with wins for Joel Jackson (Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door) and Melina Vidler (800 Words) -both sent acceptance speeches via video. Pint-sized Ky Baldwin, who also won for the Peter Allen miniseries, impressed everyone with his confidence and for devoting half his acceptance speech to complimenting fellow nominee Benson Jack Anthony (800 Words). All three score an LA trip, classes at Stella Adler Academy of Acting & Theatre and US representation.

  1. The Logies voting systems for popular awards have always had their share of controversy. I recall Ray Martin used to humbly quip that he only won several Gold Logies because his wife or mother in law would buy multiple copies of TV Week and post the voting coupon in! Electronic voting and sms voting in previous years and now social media campaigns continue to throw up wild card entries into the Gold Logie race.
