Former judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson returned to the American Idol stage today as the reality juggernaut finished its mammoth 15 season run.

Abdul and Jackson appeared to be genuinely surprised by Cowell’s appearance halfway through them sharing memories onstage with host Ryan Seacrest.

“We were going to talk about how much we missed you and why you didn’t show up,” said Abdul.

“We should have known better,” added Jackson.

“I’d like to say on behalf of us, thank you America for inviting us into your homes,” Cowell began.

“Thank you to the contestants, to FOX for actually putting us on air, and to you guys (Abdul, Jackson) for being my best friends. I am going to miss you.”

“This was an amazing journey,” Abdul told Seacrest. “I know you love the word ‘journey.'”

The two hour finale was a showcase of Idol‘s music graduates including Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia Barrino and LaToya London. A pregnant Kelly Clarkson had a pre-recorded performance, but there was no sign of Adam Lambert. Even William Hung got through a few more choruses of “She Bangs.”

Current judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. watched on as Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae battled it out for the Season 15 crown.

As he signed off for the last time, was a hint of more to come from Ryan Seacrest telling viewers, “Goodnight America. For now.”

  1. American Idol was must-see TV for a time, and the finale paid a touching tribute to that legacy. TV is cyclical, it will be back sometime, I’m sure. I did feel a bit sorry for the two finalists this year though, the crowning of the new Idol seemed somewhat insignificant compared to saying farewell to the show after so many years.

  2. Really enjoyed the finale, while the winner wasn’t my choice still a great talent chosen. The finale was really put together well with former contestants brought back and showcasing some of the talent that has been discovered, there was nothing cheesy at all with any of the performances it was great it was just the Idol family performing. We noticed at home also Adam Lambert not in the final, he did appear a few weeks ago singing two songs so it was a bit of a shame he wasn’t there at the end.
Don’t knock Paula I think she is great, her “Forever Your Girl” album is still one of my favourite cd’s. I remember an interview Simon gave years ago and he was saying how nice Paula was and how much she is loved by the contestants.

  3. Loved the finale, was emotional watching all the amazing talent that’s come out of the show these past 15 years – and great winner too, such a talent!

  4. The funny thing is Simon has gotten younger looking since the start of Idol and Paula still has that look “what’s happening here, where am I, what’s your name…”
