Veteran broadcaster Bruce Mansfield, best known as a former TEN News presenter and current 3AW presenter, has died aged 71.
He died following a battle with prostate cancer, diagnosed last September.
Mansfield, who had some 55 years in radio and television, was until recently on air with 3AW as one half of the top-rating evening Nightline programme, with Phillip Brady.
He began in radio in 1960 at 3UZ at the age of 16, moving to GTV9 in 1968 on In Melbourne Tonight.
In 1974 he joined TEN as a newsreader alongside Annette Allison. Mansfield soon became the voice of ATV-0 Melbourne, before hosting Personality Squares, and was the announcer on Perfect Match and later Good Morning Australia and Rove Live.
He returned to radio as the quick-witted ‘Uncle Roy’ alongside John Blackman on 3AW, before eventually becoming one half of Bruce and Phil on AW from 1990. Mansfield always had a love of nostalgia, entertainment and local production, showcased in a weekly Remember When segment.
“It’s come as a bit of a shock,” Phillip Brady said today.
“I guess since September when he was diagnosed, we’ve been prepared for the worst.
“Although he struggled with the illness he came on air for quite some time while he was unwell.”

Shocked and deeply saddened.
Google Channel Ten with Bert Newton.
A barrow of laughs. [love Bruce’s giggles]
Very sad loss, used to listen to nightline with bruce and phil on 3aw, they did an amazing job together. Also feel sad for Phil, the loss of his good radio mate 🙁
Sad. I remember his segments on rove live with the swivel chair.
Words cannot express the loss of a much loved man who has made a good contribution to the Ten News Industry. He was a true gentleman, and a much loved radio presenter. :'(
Very sad day. I will always remember Bruce as the voice of channel 0 and 10 in Melbourne. A news reader and voice over person. A quality voice.

First time I met Bruce I was doing a radio spot on 3AW and he was filling in for another presenter, we only met 5 mins before going to air. His opening line to the segment was “David, I look at you and I think of Television!” which was lovely given he had decades more association than myself. Farewell….
Loved “Nightline”, even phoned in and spoke to Bruce & Phil several times. I was a former 3AW boy, starting there in 1957 and was of the era that “Remember When” catered for. R.I.P.
RIP.
Gentleman…Legend…Yep…..:(
R.I.P.
I know he did a lot of different things over the years, but I will always remember him as the ‘Chinese Superman’ on the original Saturday morning ‘Hey Hey Its Saturday’. He and Darryl desperately trying to keep it together. 🙂
