Veteran US actress Doris Roberts, best known for Everybody Loves Raymond, has died, aged 90.

She died in her sleep of natural causes on Sunday night.

Roberts played Ray Romano’s (Raymond Barone) mother Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 – 2005.

The role earned her seven Emmy nominations and four wins for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She also won an Emmy for a guest appearance on St. Elsewhere and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for the American Playhouse production of The Sunset Gang.

She began her acting career in the early 1950s on TV’s Studio One, going on to on appear in The Naked City, Way Out, Ben Casey and The Defenders.

Amongst her many credits were All in the Family, Remington Steele, Desperate Housewives, The King of Queens, The Middle, Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order: SVU, Alice, Barney Miller, Full House, Soap, and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

Film credits included A Lovely Way to Die, No Way to Treat a Lady, The Honeymoon Killers, Such Good Friends, Little Murders, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Her stage career includes numerous Broadway shows, including The Desk Set, Neil Simon’s The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Terrence McNally’s Bad Habits.

Roberts still has a film in post-production awaiting release, The Red Maple Leaf.

  1. Loved her as Marie in Everybody Loves Raymond. Agree with others, she was perfect for that role. Can watch this sitcom over and over and never tire of it. RIP Doris.

  2. That’s sad, but then again Doris Roberts had a long and fruitful life and career. I first remember seeing her as Donna Pescow’s mum in ‘Angie’ (1979) and then didn’t see her in stuff for a long time. Her Marie will live on and on. A great and talented lady.

  4. The role of Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond was a perfect example of how an actor/actress was born to play a particular role. She was absolutely flawless in that show. RIP Doris.
