WIN Network has been recognised at the Tasmanian Media Awards 2016.

Brent Costelloe (pictured) was named Best Sports Journalist for the third year in a row and veteran cameraman Steve Fisher won the Best News Image category for his vision of a daring prison escape in 2015.

WIN Television also secured three finalists with Sophie Kuryl recognised for Legal Reporting, Elizabeth Anile for Best New Journalist and Nick Glover for Best Image – Video.

WIN Hobart Station Manager Tony Fox said, “There was a record 122 entries across all categories this year and judges commented on the calibre of the entrants which makes the recognition of our journalists all the more special.

“I congratulate the team on their superb efforts in ensuring viewers are well informed about the stories happening in their backyard.”

Brent Costelloe received accolades for his body of work throughout the year with judges praising his consistency, persistence and writing ability, calling his Glenorchy Brothers piece “innovative and informative” and his Glenorchy Inner Sanctum story “riveting”.

Steve Fisher won his award for coverage of the escape and recapture of an allegedly armed Risdon jail prisoner which judges deemed a stand-out piece of vision.

“The vision captured the entire escape episode from the hunt to interception of the suspect swimming towards a boat, a dramatic arrest at gunpoint by police and the prisoners return to captivity,” the judges said.

“Steve’s persistence and tenacity paid off, affording news viewers all the visual drama of the event.”
