GO!, GEM and 9Life are now streaming Live on 9Now, as Nine declares more than one million sign-ups to its revamped catch-up and streaming service.

Launching in February, the free service required an email sign-up, contrasting with the non-member facility of the former platform, Jump-in.

But the service has been the subject of a legal stoush with Nine’s outgoing affiliate partner WIN Television. The latter intends to appeal a recent court ruling which it lost.

Alex Parsons, Nine’s Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, said: “The rate at which Australians are turning to catch-up and live streaming platforms continues to grow at a staggering rate.

“For some formats we are seeing long-form growth close to 30 per cent year-on-year, with a program such as Married at First Sight generating more than one million long-form video streams only weeks after the official broadcast of the final episode.”

Nine’s Chief Sales Officer, Michael Stephenson, added: “9Now allows consumers to take control of the way they watch television.

“We now have more than one million connected consumers through our single sign-in functionality and are well positioned to be able to serve addressable advertising live into the stream within 9Now. This is programmatic television.”

Comparative numbers on the former Jump-in service were not readily available.

9Now is currently available on web, iOS, Android, Telstra TV and HBBTV, with app for the following devices to follow, including Apple TV, Chromecast, Sony TV, Samsung TV, LG TV, PlayStation, Xbox and Fetch TV.

  1. Having given 9 your (fake) details do you get targeted ads or the same as everyone in your geographic location? Are 9 using Server Side Ad Insertion or Client Side I wonder? SSAI is harder to ad-block and needs a substantial data buffer to allow a manual Fast-Forward-thru-ads. CSAI often means that the ads come from a different, blockable, server. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more pre-roll ads, much like our cinemas.

  2. I can now live stream all Channel 9 channels on my iPad but when they get the Samsung TV app will I be able to live stream all their channels then!! I am in Tasmania!!

  3. I went on the 9Now website on my iMac recently and I wanted to stream some Perth programming. However they give me VIC programming. It was really hard for me to get the Perth schedule on track. How could I do this?

  4. Pity about the state-based geo-blocking. Seven allows interstate viewers to stream their various stations from different cities. I was able to watch the Good Friday telethon and donate money. But for some unknown reason Nine forces you to supply a postcode when you sign up and will not allow you to watch anything which doesn’t come from your state capital. Why?

  5. And although I don’t move in a huge circle of people….I know no one who has signed up or even wants to?….are these figures a confirmed fact or some creative chest beating.
