House Rules closing in on The Voice

Ratings: Nine wins Sunday but the competition heats up without The Voice blind auditions.

Now that The Voice blind auditions are over, more viewers are tuning in for the House Rules “reveals.”

Last night Nine’s show won its slot on 1.3m viewers, but Seven was breathing down its neck with 1.24m and a win in younger demos. That left Masterchef, from 7:30pm, somewhat caught in the crossfire at 808,000. However when the “reveals” are absent on weeknights TEN usually picks up more viewers.

All three reality shows last night surpassed the Leaders Debate at 529,000 viewers (another 99,000 watched on News 24). Not even all of ABC’s audience stayed for the politics, following ABC News.

DNA Nation on SBS lost a little ground in its second outing.

Despite a dead heat in Primary channels between Nine and Seven, Nine network won Sunday with 30.2% then Seven 28.3%, TEN 18.8%, ABC 15.8% and SBS 6.9%.

The Voice (1.3m) led for Nine followed by Nine News (1.24m) and 60 Minutes (778,000). Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons drew 308,000, ironically following a 60 Minutes apology…

Seven News was #1 with 1.42m viewers then House Rules (1.24m), Sunday Night (615,000). Bones was 312,000.

MasterChef was 808,000 on TEN. Modern Family was 471,000 / 367,000, Bondi Rescue was 372,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 335,000, and Formula One was 293,000 in 3 cities (122,000 on ONE).

ABC News (792,000), Midsomer Murders (696,000), Australia Votes: Leaders’ Debate (529,000 / 99,000 News 24) and Compass (294,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was DNA Nation (307,000), Rome’s Invisible City (284,000), SBS World News (199,000) and Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail (195,000).

ABC2’s Octonauts (237,000) topped multichannels.

OzTAM Overnights: Sunday 29 May 2016.

  1. House Rules has always been quite a slow burner – Seven could easily have dumped it a couple of weeks into the first series but kept faith and ultimately it paid off. Think it’s looking strong for a 5th season now.

  2. I love Masterchef, but I think they could do with some fresh guests. Not even Marco has the same clout he did as when he was first brought in.

Tonight looks interesting with a new guest chef, and it was nice having Nigella come in. But only cause she’s a great personality, not so much an inspiring chef. I think she’d be better suited to week 1 or week 2 where the contestants are still finding their feet.

The show has probably spoilt us with a lot of wow moments, so it’s getting harder to watch episodes and be really blown away with concepts. And so I think the best way to fix this is to energise everyone with new inspiration.

  3. Interestingly, although the blind editions are over, the Voice ratings are higher than a week ago. Masterchef seems to have suffered at the hands of House Rules, which is strange because Masterchef is a much more appealing show.

  4. I knew that House Rules would increase when Voice Blind auditions ended.
This reinforces to me that The Voice is a novelty singing show, rather than the inter brands that were more about a record contract and the music industry.

  5. Last year, Masterchef was already established at 7.30 on Sundays, but this year, TEN had the chance to start it at 7pm to match the competition (on Sunday, weeknights still 7.30). Yes, they had new Modern Family at 7, but it’s just double repeats now. 9 and 7, here’s some free viewers for you!

    1. Yes, there was a period two months ago where Ten were showing four new eps per week! They have three left in the series and they dont show them. Geez, hard to be loyal and follow it on Ten’s schedule.
