It’s a case of good news and bad news for Homeland fans.

The bad news is Season 6 won’t return until 2017, but the good news is it is close to a getting renewals for both Season 7 and even Season 8.

Showtime CEO David Nevins has confirmed final talks with FOX 21 Television Studios to renew the series for a seventh and eighth season, each of which will also include star Claire Danes and showrunner Alex Gansa.

He also stressed that the news doesn’t necessarily mean that the show will end at Season 8.

“Just because I’m not thinking that far ahead doesn’t mean Alex Gansa and his team aren’t,” he said. “It’s changing itself pretty dramatically each season. I think more than most, this show has an open-ended expiration date. That said, I’ve been focused on getting this deal done and not really asking what happens beyond this deal.”

Meanwhile the upcoming sixth season, which relocates to New York, won’t be in the mix at the beginning of the US Fall season which kicks off in September.

Set to dramatise the period between Election Day (November 8) and Inauguration Day (January 20) the show is out for this year. Presumably that means the writers need to know who wins the election in order to incorporate into storylines. Sounds like we are looking at a January premiere.
