PETA calls on Zoo to stop using wild animals

Animal rights group want US drama to turn to CGI, instead of live animals.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has called upon US drama series Zoo to stop using wild animals in its production, and draw upon technology instead.

PETA has taken out ads in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Wall Street Journal featuring a computer-generated chimpanzee handcuffed with strips of film.

“Some Shows Hold More Than an Audience Captive. CBS: Use CGI to Free All Animals From ‘Zoo’,” it suggests.

Last season, Zoo used big cats, a bear, wolves, and two baboons, among many other animals. PETA says this season it is also reportedly planning to use wolves, reindeer, horses, and buffalo.

“If Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book can create entire realistic animal kingdoms with CGI, then CBS can clearly make its show without exploiting any live animals,” PETA SVP Lisa Lange said. “PETA is calling on the network to switch entirely to affordable, accessible, humane, and versatile technology—and stop using animals who are caged, whipped, and denied everything that’s natural and important to them.”

CBS declined to comment.

The series is returning to ONE in Australia.

  1. valid point. I enjoyed season 1. I guess they still want to show some realism, and good CGI used in movies is more expensive I presume considering the TV budget is much lower
