Studio 10 breaches PG classification

A flashback story on Rob Lowe's sex tape showed just a bit too much for Studio 10's audience.

Studio 10-6

Studio 10 has breached the Code of Practice 2015 for showing images that exceeded a PG classification.

The programme on New Year’s Day this year looked back at the year 1988 referring to the sex tape scandal involving Rob Lowe.

Media watchdog the Australian Communications and Media Authority noted an image broadcast for 19 seconds, depicted a number of people in a bedroom.

“In both of the smaller still images, a man is depicted from a rear side-angle with an erect penis in blurry silhouette. Both of these smaller images are low resolution and appear to have been captured from video footage,” it found.

TEN conceded that the still images exceeded the PG classification of the program and attributed it to human error. It has now taken a number of steps to minimise future breaches, including new operating procedures and Code training with Studio 10 staff.

ACMA advised those actions address their compliance issues.

    1. I actually disagree. Sure that may be the case for adults. But it’s an 8:30 timeslot during school holidays, you’d have kids viewing. For a parent of an inquisitive kid who is say 9 or 10, the parent is left to do the explaining. Networks must adhere to classification so viewers can make an informed decision. If it was a repeat it is doubly confounding. So too is the exchange that must have taken place with the complainant before it was elevated. What on earth could TEN have said? We didn’t do it? It was ok? Can’t work out how it needed to be elevated.

  1. God I didn’t think there was anything wrong with a penis I mean hello life would not exist if it wasn’t for the Penis, so what if a kid happened to see it, they will say what is that and parent will say it’s a Penis.

    1. A penis can be shown on TV subject to the context, an erect penis is likely to breach the rules regarding actual and not implied sexual act. I asked about this recently as we just had an erect horse penis (with fluid!) on Pay TV.

      1. There was a 1988-themed episode of Studio 10 aired during the year. Apparently it was repeated on New Year’s Day.

@Crossroads: ACMA only act when they receive a complaint. So they must not have received a complaint from anyone from the episode’s original viewing and it was someone watching the repeat that lodged a complaint.

  2. Some of Midday movies on Seven has swearing (F word). A lot of US comedies these days have low n smutty references to sex and bordering on filth. Where is the logic?

    1. It’s about the classification. e.g. Midday movies can be classified M provided it’s not school holidays. Studio 10 is PG which carries a lower threshold of what’s allowed.

  3. I’m surprised anyone could see anything, it was such a low grade tape, all blurry and fuzzy, wasn’t exactly the best resolution in those days! You’d have to be pausing and rewinding it to really see ‘it’.

    1. I’m going to assume that you learnt that information from a friend! My friend agrees with yours. You’d have to already know what it was you were looking at before you could could be sure that Rob was fully ready to express his love for the young lady involved.

      1. Ugh, unfortunately from personal experience. When I was a teen some boys put it on to show off to the girls and I felt I’d be ‘uncool’ if I left. I’m certainly not prudish but I think it’s crappy watching leaked celeb sex tapes.
