Whitehorse Council last night voted to grant Heritage Overlay for the former ATV-0 studios in Nunawading.

The site has been home to countless productions including Neighbours (still filmed on site), Prisoner, Young Talent Time, Rove Live, The Magic Circle Club, Holiday Island, The Comedy Company, Carson’s Law, The Box, Kommotion, The Early Bird Show and TEN Eyewitness News.

Councillors voted 8-2 in favour of a Heritage status for the site, built in 1963 under Reg Ansett. The studios were identified as the Best Building of the Year by the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in 1965.

Last week former TEN News presenter Mal Walden told TV Tonight, “History is always worth preserving in whatever form. Given that television is going through a dramatic evolution and already much has been lost, (Nine and Seven studios) I think some form of preservation is vitally important.”

The move now goes to the State Minister for formal approval, to be gazetted for legal status, which is expected to take some months.

The current lease to FremantleMedia extends to 2019 with an option for extension to 2028.
