Today officially marks the 50th birthday for Play School.
The show officially debuted on July 18th 1966.
It is now the longest-running children’s show in Australia, and the second-longest-running children’s show in the world.
In 2016, iconic Australian television program Play School celebrates 50 years on air as the nation’s most respected, trusted and longest-running children’s series. Since its initial broadcast in July, 1966, Play School has been entertaining Australian preschoolers, providing them with new experiences and learning opportunities, encouraging them to wonder, to think, to feel and to imagine. Throughout the birthday month of July, the ABC will present a variety of special content across ABC, ABC KIDS and ABC iview to celebrate the occasion with three generations of Australians who have grown up with Play School as an essential part of their childhood

I’m assuming the longest running children’s show is the original BBC version?
No it ended in 1988. Longest is Blue Peter (UK) 1958. Sesame Street was 1969.
