australia-leaderboard-2016-06Earlier this week Netflix released data for its ISP Speed Index.

It ranked Optus the best followed by TPG and iiNet.

Telstra ranked 6th of the major ISPs.

Australia (purple line) also trails the countries with the best ISP results, as indicated in this graphic. Note that this graphic does not include all countries.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on particular ISPs (internet service providers) around the globe, and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network.

  1. All ISP’s use Telstra infrastructure at some point. Optus is Telstra’s biggest customer. Netflix clients would be using a mixture of Mobile Phones, Satellite, ADSL, HFC, Fibre, WiFi etc so putting them in a single bucket for a comparison is hardly fair.

    1. Not all ISPs use Telstra’s infrastructure. If you’re counting the copper phone lines then, sure, all ADSL users do, but other large ISPs own their own DSLAMs, internet nodes, PoPs, and backhaul.

FTTP NBN users don’t use any Telstra cabling or equipment unless they’re with Telstra or a reseller. Same with Optus Satellite.
