Nine takes Sunday in Team Delta battle

Ratings: But The Voice ends lower than 2015 and Blind Auditions. ABC faces a tough night with local premieres.

Nine’s grand final for The Voice ensured it won Sunday night with 1.29m viewers for the moment Alfie Arcuri was named winner.

The bulk of the show averaged 1.15m viewers, trumping Masterchef and Sunday Night.

But the numbers were well down on the 2015 grand final of 1.55m / 1.5m and were lower than those attracted by the Blind Auditions (around 1.4m viewers).

ABC’s big line-up had its work cut out but the Play School special fared better than the premiere of Barracuda, which was always a big ask on a Sunday instead of Thursday. But it did enjoy positive social media feedback. All episodes are now available on iview.

Nine network won with 33.7% then Seven 27.0%, TEN 18.3%, ABC 13.8% and SBS 7.1%.

Following The Voice, Nine News drew 1.25m and 60 Minutes was 885,000 in preliminary figures.

Seven News (1.25m) was best for Seven then Sunday Night (963,000) and Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America (494,000) -fourth in its slot. Wimbledon drew 387,000 and Bones was just 319,000.

MasterChef pulled 982,000 for TEN. Modern Family was 445,000 / 296,000, Bondi Rescue was 430,000 and Supercars Championship was 242,000 from Townsville.

ABC News (769,000), Big Ted’s Excellent Adventure: 50 Years of Play School (612,000) and Barracuda (514,000) comprised the bulk of ABC’s night. Compass was 281,000, Billy Connolly’s Big Send Off was just 214,000.

On SBS Rome: Empire Without Limit pulled 253,000 then SBS World News (211,000) and Tour de France (189,000).

Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom ruled multichannels with 210,000.

  2. Interesting to hear Matt Nable’s accent. I thought it was supposed to be South African until he made some comment about when he was in Hungary! Why burden a good actor with that confusion. I agree with Gonzo, phony, lame and earnest. Gave it 20 minutes which was generous.

  3. Barracuda was poor. If that’s the “best drama on ABC this year”, well there are serious problems at Aunty.

    Script was really quite lame and phoney in parts.

    Has anyone ever watched the swimming when a swimmer has been able to get out of the pool and speak without panting or catching breath? I’ve also never would have suspected that a national school title race would take place in a 25 meter pool without diving blocks…

  4. Barracuda was fantastic, a really well developed and produced Aussie drama, a great young cast of relatively unknowns, Matt Nable nailed that accent and Rachel Griffiths is just delicious as the uber tanned bitchy leader of the pool mums!!! Or future POOS (Parents Of Olympic Swimmers!)

    1. Have yet to watch Barracuda but am a big fan of Rachel and Matt as they are always excellent in everything they’re in.
      Look forward to watching – definitely sounds superior to Cleverman…

  6. I’m a fan of Christos Tsiolkas, but I’ve always been disappointed with the film and TV adaptations of his work. They always get turned into depressing, angsty melodramas (ever seen Dead Europe? Yikes). Not so with Barracuda, which is the best thing I’ve seen on the ABC for a very long time.

    It’s strange that the print media and social media went bananas over Cleverman even before it had screened, yet there hasn’t been much said about Barracuda. The writing, acting and directing on the latter are vastly superior to Cleverman. Here’s hoping the ABC can continue to bring new stories to the small screen that are this good (and here’s also hoping that our “new” government doesn’t decide to decimate ABC funding).

    1. Good to hear. Reviews I have seen of Barracuda have all been good. Cleverman certainly broke through some new ground as Indigenous sci-fi, so I think most media acknowledged its risk-taking and performances such as Hunter Page-Lochard. Remember that reviews usually respond to an opening chapter, or two at best, so more concerns emerged later including for me. Looking forward to more Barracuda.

    2. Yes, i’m one of the 3 people that saw Dead Europe. Most turgid! I too am a fan of Christos. I got to meet him many years ago; found him a gentle soul. I was expecting somebody more angsty like his work – especially after seeing Head On. A great writer. I’ll have to check this series out.

  8. Think the problem with Voice is they moved it from night to night and just went to long . Should have locked in Sunday 7-830 and then have 60 minutes start at a standard time

    1. I agree with you emurray. The Voice has so many ads from time to time and it really made it really dull to watch. S1 drew over 3 million viewers, and as years go by, the Winner Announced ratings dropped suddenly.

  9. I’m sure there’s a reason, but I find it a little strange that 9 put the finale in the same week as a State of Origin match. I mean, they already almost automatically win the ratings week with S.O.O, so I would have thought separating the 2 “events” might have been better for them.
